Don’t forget about our Little Free Library! 📚💙

We have a little take a book, leave a book library tucked inside The Curiosity Shoppe… but here’s the important part: you absolutely do NOT have to leave a book to take one!

I have plenty of books waiting for their turn on the shelves, so if you see something you’d like to read, please take it home and enjoy it. That’s what they’re here for!

I’m adding a few more today, including some books for younger readers and a couple of devotionals for teen girls. 📖

And of course, if you have books you’ve finished and would like to pass along, you’re always welcome to add to the library too.

Take one. Leave one. Leave none. Just keep the books moving and being enjoyed. 💙

A little Labor Day weekend shop update! 💙

The Curiosity Shoppe will only be open a half day today, and our usual First Saturday will be postponed until NEXT Saturday, September 12th, as I’ll be traveling out of town for the holiday weekend.

In the meantime… enjoy a peek at some of our newest creations! I’ve got lots of fun things coming together around here, and I can’t wait to share more.

Finished!!! My Romantic Victorian Plague Doctor is officially done, and I LOVE how different he feels from the Dystopian version. 🖤

The funny thing is… I don’t think I could choose between them.

They hit two completely different sides of the things I’m drawn to — even down to the books I love. Give me something dark, gritty and dystopian… but also give me romantic, moody, beautiful and a little gothic. Apparently I need both. 😂

Same pattern. Two completely different personalities.

I have been absolutely loving ’s patterns, and this one was SO much fun to work with… especially getting to take the same design and see just how completely different I could make it feel with the glass choices.

So now that they’re finally side by side… which one are you choosing — Romantic Victorian or Dystopian?

Cleaning up all that flux after soldering… one of those not-so-glamorous but very necessary parts of stained glass. 😅

I start with Kwik Clean, give everything a good scrub with a toothbrush to get the flux out from around the solder lines and all those little crevices, then wipe it down. After that I go back over it with Kwik Clean and a microfiber cloth to really buff everything out and make sure I haven’t missed anything.

But this time I decided to try something new…

I’ve seen other stained glass artists use a little square of Magic Eraser to apply their patina, and I like trying different techniques now and then just to see if I might like something better than the way I’ve been doing it.

And… I was actually pretty impressed.The patina was really easy to apply this way and those solder lines got NICE and black.

This is just a little teaser of some of what I’ll have there… and Queen City Steam Works will also have pieces from several other amazing artists, each bringing their own particular niche and style.

Soldering the Romantic Victorian Plague Doctor… and this stage deserved a little ASMR moment. 😌

I soldered the back first, pulled the tape from the front, then went back through all those lines to bring everything together. The heavily textured glass definitely makes me work for it, but watching those solder lines smooth out is so satisfying.

And now… ready for patina. 🖤

Apparently I’ve been working harder than I needed to. 😂

I tend to make do with the tools I have, and my old soldering iron technically worked…but it didn’t heat consistently, didn’t like taking solder, and getting nice solder lines out of it took WORK.

Then I found this Weller soldering iron on Facebook Marketplace…and ohhhh my goodness. 😍 The difference! It heats beautifully, takes the solder easily, and laying down those lines feels so much smoother.

It may be new-to-me, but I am absolutely loving it.

Of course now I’m thinking about the Hakko soldering iron…and about 47 other stained glass things I’d like to have. 😂

Sometimes my right-eye astigmatism makes focusing on tiny details a little harder… especially when my eyes are tired.

Centering copper foil on the edge of glass is one of those times when precision really matters, so out comes the magnifying lamp. The bright light and magnification take some of the strain off my eyes and make it much easier to see exactly where that foil is landing.

Sometimes the best tool in the studio is simply the one that makes the job easier. 💙

One little thing I pay attention to is where I start my foil seam. Whenever possible, I start it on an inside edge of the overall piece rather than along the outside perimeter. That gives the overlap a little more protection and helps reduce the chance of it lifting later.

From there, it’s all about keeping the glass centered on the foil, folding everything over neatly… and then burnishing the crap out of it. 😂 I want those edges smooth, the wrinkles worked out, and the foil pressed firmly against the glass. I usually burnish until I can see the copper take on a slightly lighter sheen.

And after allllll of those individual pieces… the Victorian Plague Doctor is officially through the foiling stage. 💙
