Rob Lewbel's background as a union lighting technician in the Los Angeles film industry has laid the foundation for Moonshine Lamp. After fiddling around with a briefcase, some batteries and a few small lightbulbs, Rob handed his completed project assignment to the actors on the set of Pulp Fiction. When they opened the briefcase, a blast of light emanated from within. And, that was just the begin

ning. Rewiring antique lamps and sourcing out modern hi-tech fixtures has been a mainstay in the career of film industry lighting technicians. So, it was only natural for Rob to transition his knowledge of unique lighting fixture components to his love for design and repurposing found objects.

This was a very technically challenging job. Sometimes trying to come up with something new for a customer who is building a custom home can feel like reinventing the wheel. It’s actually one of the most challenging tasks when design has to remain within specific guard rails yet must also step confidently outside of those lines enough to capture attention.

I think we’re all quite good at shutting down ideas. How many times do we hear a great idea but understand it to be something someone else can probably undertake…but certainly not “me.” I had many “off-ramps” during the early days of starting my business. There were certainly hurdles to overcome, not the least of which is the very simple notion that I could do it. I recently read a quote attributed to Winston Churchill that I hadn’t seen before but which may have to become my bumper sticker- Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.

It’s always a good idea to have a professional in the manufacturing world to visit a workshop space that’s part of a functioning business - so much to learn. Some things are intuitive and other consulting suggestions become “ah-ha” moments…..and then there’s the obvious laziness and lack of attention to detail. I’m determined to do better!! Stay tuned!!

Another great installation for some super cool customers in Lake Arrowhead, CA. Very challenging job as there was an offset electrical box on one side of the island with the need for a mirror image opposing suspension point on the other side. Another great use of my trusty adjustable aircraft cable gripping devices. So handy! I used some amazing blown glass orbs made by L.A. glass artist and some really cool funky handmade crooked glass vases. A 1 1/2” thick piece of oak hardwood held everything in the air.

Just a lazy Saturday at the shop, getting a head start o the week after the holiday break. And this fixture is headed up to Reno NV where I’ll be doing an installation during my work vacation/ CA Roadtrip. Super fun week ahead.

Got a lot going in the shop right now - beer keg light fixtures for a new tap room, the grand microphone nest chandelier for Aspen, some live edge pieces and three Dogwood Branch chandeliers. Doing a Thanksgiving weekend drop off and install in Reno which will incorporate a nice little roadtrip getaway for a minute.
