Well, we survived our first Witches Night Out AND Halloween on Main!
🎃 🐿️

And what a couple of days!

There were witches. LOTS of witches. At times, things got a little hectic, but that’s half the fun!

Thank you to everyone who came downtown, stopped in to shop, drew an eyeball from our cauldron or brought the kiddos by for Halloween treats.

I loved seeing downtown Rushville come alive with all the activity, and I’m so glad The Velvet Squirrel got to be part of it.

The candy has been distributed, the discounts have been awarded, and management is considering a short vacation.

Unfortunately, the eyeballs have refused to leave. They have reiterated they are staying until 4!

The surveillance department remains fully staffed. 👁️👁️👁️

The Belgian Delegation has requested a full accounting of Friday night’s activities.

Management has declined, citing exhaustion and an alarming number of witches.

Seriously, thank you all for making our first Halloween festivities so much fun! 🧡🐿️

🐿️ SQUIRREL SCHOOL: FLOWER FROGS, PART TWO

Class is back in session. Unfortunately, the faculty has become difficult to manage.

Remember those funny little flower frogs we asked you to identify? Including the suggestion that they were for lipstick? 😂

Well, today we’re discussing second careers, workplace misconduct, and the importance of not throwing away perfectly good flowers.

First, an actual educational moment. Please try to remain calm.

When a beautiful bouquet starts looking a little rough, don’t toss the whole thing! Rescue the flowers that are still hanging on, trim their stems, and arrange them in a smaller vessel using a flower frog.

Those flowers in the picture are the remaining survivors from the bouquets I received for The Velvet Squirrel’s grand opening. 5bloomsdesign vogelsfloristandlandscaping

Still beautiful. Still employed. Refusing to leave the premises.

Meanwhile, their colleague in the foreground has apparently abandoned the floral industry altogether.

It is now operating an unauthorized vocational training facility offering courses in cosmetology, office administration, needlework, and the handling of small sharp objects.

There was no application process.

There are no safety protocols.

The scissors are orange.

The Belgian Delegation arrived for an inspection and immediately requested a meeting with Human Resources.

We do not have Human Resources.

We barely have management.

At this point, the flower frog is essentially running the place.

Anyway, the educational takeaway is that these little vintage contraptions are wonderfully versatile, and you should absolutely give them a second look.

Preferably before they unionize.

What else would you stick in a flower frog?

Class dismissed. The scissors have been confiscated pending an investigation.

Looking for something to do with your little squirrels over fall break? 🐿️

Bring them downtown to decorate a pumpkin! 🎃 We’ve got some fall fun going on here at The Velvet Squirrel and next door at Country Made Boutique. The door between our shops is open, so come on through and see us both!

A little pumpkin decorating, a little shopping, and an excuse to get out of the house. Sounds like a pretty good fall break activity to me! 🍂

🐿️ SQUIRREL TAILS: THE DOOR THAT REFUSED TO RETIRE

Once, this green door welcomed family and friends into the farmhouse that stood on our farm—Mark’s family home until November 1968.

One month after Mark was born, the family moved into the new house built directly in front of it. The same house we live in today. ❤️

The door and several of its companions eventually retired to the mow of our big red barn.

Or so they thought.

Years later, this one returned to service displaying table assignments at Adam’s wedding. One of its relatives became the wedding bar.

And now? This same green door is the checkout counter at The Velvet Squirrel.

It has welcomed families, survived barn retirement, attended a wedding, and entered retail.

Frankly, its résumé is becoming intimidating. 😂

That’s what I love about old things. Their value isn’t always measured in dollars. Sometimes it’s measured in the lives—and the ordinary days—they’ve quietly been part of.

Do you have something from your family’s past that has found a new purpose in your home?

Retirement request: denied. ❤️🐿️
