🌸 A little PSA from your local floral designer 🌸
I feel like this is one of those “elephant in the room” things worth talking about because flower prices right now are INSANE....and I mean *open the price list every week and question every decision that led me to this career* insane 😂
BUT before I get into it, I want you to know this is coming from a place of deepest sincerity and utmost transparency because you guys deserve to know what's happening behind the scenes.
I'm not building a mansion. I'm not buying a yacht. Hell, I'm not even secretly stashing away a retirement fund on your $65 flower arrangement 😂 so before anyone thinks your girl has suddenly decided to get rich one bouquet at a time let me pull the curtain back just a little...
A HUGE portion of the flowers we use here are imported, primarily from Colombia and Ecuador, and right now there are several things hitting the floral industry all at once.
Colombia increased its minimum wage 22.7% this year. That matters because flowers are incredibly labor intensive to grow, harvest, grade and pack, so labor makes up a huge portion of production costs.
Then add tariffs on imported flowers, air freight, fuel, refrigerated transportation and whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at the farms.
Since flowers are perishable they have to be cut, cooled, packed, flown thousands of miles, transported under refrigeration and STILL get to me with enough life left that I feel good about selling them to you.
All of that gets factored into what I pay before I ever touch a stem and trust me when I say I feel the prices too 😅 Sometimes I look at a price and genuinely wonder if those roses come with a small piece of land.
Behind the scenes, I'm constantly checking multiple wholesalers, comparing prices AND quality, buying in bulk when I can and making substitutions when something gets ridiculously expensive....basically, a shocking amount of my job has become flower stock market analyst 😂📈🌹
I also know flowers are a luxury. Groceries are expensive. Gas is expensive. Kids are expensive. LIFE is expensive. I completely understand that a bouquet isn't always in the budget, and I never want anyone to feel bad about that. That's also why we aren't just flowers. We have plants, gifts, home décor and plenty of other ways to send someone a little love when fresh flowers don't make sense for your budget.
But when flowers ARE what you want, I'm going to keep doing everything I can to make your money count.
If you give me a $55 budget, my job is to make you the prettiest damn $55 arrangement I can.
Maybe that means we go with something low & lush. Maybe I substitute another flower that's beautiful and gives you more bang for your buck. Maybe I'm stalking three wholesalers trying to find hydrangea at a price that doesn't make me want to vomit. 😂
That's part of my job, and I take it seriously.
So no, this isn't a “flowers are expensive, deal with it” post. Quite the opposite.
It's me saying I know they're expensive. I know everything is expensive. I feel it too.
I just want you to know that I'm working my butt off behind the scenes to keep beautiful, quality flowers as affordable as I possibly can for this little community ❤️🌸
There's just a whole lot happening between a farm thousands of miles away and that bouquet sitting on your kitchen table that is out of my control but I feel you all deserve to know a little bit more about it.
And if you see me staring aggressively at a bucket of roses in the cooler... just keep walking....They're probably beautiful. They're probably expensive...and I'm probably trying to figure out how the heck I'm going to use them without charging you your firstborn child 😂🌹
