There was a time when even the cookie jar was expected to bring a little beauty to the kitchen.
This lovely 1950s glass jar, attributed to Bartlett-Collins and decorated in the colorful Gay Fad style, has a purple flower, jewel-toned fruit, and softly worn gold leaves painted across its frosted-white surface. At 9½ inches tall, it has that generous old-fashioned size made for a proper batch of cookies—or perhaps a pantry full of little treasures.
The hand-painted decoration shows some wear, particularly in the gold details, and there is light wear beneath the lid where it has rested through the years. But the glass remains free from chips and cracks, and the original lid is still present.
I believe a little honest wear only reminds us that a piece was once part of somebody’s everyday life. Now it is ready to add its cheerful mid-century color to another kitchen, pantry, or collected home.
