Struck around 510–470 BC, this ancient silver nomos comes from Metapontion, a Greek city in southern Italy famous for its rich farmland—and its unmistakable coinage.

🌾 At the heart of the design is Metapontion’s iconic barley ear, a symbol of the agricultural wealth that helped the city prosper. The obverse shows the barley in bold relief alongside META, identifying the coin with the Metapontines.

But the reverse is what makes these early coins especially fascinating: the same barley ear appears incuse—sunken into the coin rather than raised.

This unusual minting technique is one of the defining features of the earliest coinage of Magna Graecia and makes pieces like this an important chapter in the development of Western coinage.

With beautiful silver-gray surfaces, deeper charcoal toning, and an unmistakably archaic character, this is more than an ancient coin—it’s a surviving piece of Greek history from nearly 25 centuries ago.

Would you add a Metapontion barley-ear nomos to your ancient collection?

This Eastern Roman Empire AV solidus was struck for Emperor Valens, who ruled from AD 364 to 378. Valens’ reign was a pivotal period in late Roman history, marked by the division of imperial power between East and West and culminating in the disastrous Battle of Adrianople in AD 378. Solidii of this era were the premier gold denomination of the empire, widely trusted for their consistent weight and purity, and they remain among the most desirable ancient gold issues for collectors today.

The obverse presents a pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valens facing right, accompanied by the imperial titulature naming him as Augustus. The reverse depicts the emperor standing in a formal military-imperial pose, a type emblematic of late Roman authority and continuity, with the Antioch mint attribution noted on the certification.

An appealing certified ancient gold issue from a consequential emperor, this Valens solidus offers both historical depth and enduring collector demand.

👑 THE GREAT KING OF BAKTRIA 👑

Few ancient coins command attention quite like the tetradrachms of Eukratides I.

Struck circa 170–145 BC, this impressive silver tetradrachm features one of the great royal portraits of the Hellenistic world. Eukratides appears in a crested helmet decorated with a bull’s horn and ear—a powerful image of military strength, royal authority, and heroic ambition.

On the reverse, the Dioskouroi—Castor and Pollux—charge forward on horseback, carrying spears and palm branches representing victory, protection, and military virtue.

Add in the bold high-relief portrait, large silver flan, and beautiful original cabinet toning, and you have a coin that captures exactly why Baktrian Greek coinage is so highly regarded today.

More than 2,100 years later, the ambition of the “Great King” still comes through in silver.

Ancient history you can actually hold in your hand. ✨
