🕸️ John Galliano, spring/summer 1997

With its sheer black web spiraling across the body, this Galliano dress captures the designer’s gift for weaving fantasy into couture. The gossamer silk overlay, anchored by a jeweled spider, embodies Galliano’s theatrical vision at its height in the late 1990s.

The piece is both beautiful and unsettling—a balance Galliano mastered like few others.

Mamma brought me up right. Liberty fabrics was something to be worshiped. My Dad sported a 1970’s Liberty paisley tie (I have it) and the last thing my Mom bought me before she stopped driving was a Liberty print bathrobe. On my one trip to London I made pilgrimage to the textile temple that is Liberty. PS. They have the best scones and clotted cream in the cafe.

In an 1889 article edited by Oscar Wilde, one writer called Liberty Fabrics “the chosen resort of the artistic shopper.” Known for its bold floral textiles since, the luxury department store continues to be a “resort” and refuge for anyone who adores textiles, decoration, and color.
