Later in March 2023 I refinished badly worn prefinished Brazilian cherry for what was Maria’s Sweet Somethings on Front Street in Salem. This is straight satin oil polyurethane. The shop is now under new ownership as Whimsy’s and I urge you all to buy insane amounts of candy and ice cream from them.

With the passing of my Dad in December, I’m finally able to look back on what has been a year of running Ray’s Wood Floors by myself. It’s a privilege to have this responsibility, and it’s proven to be the best challenge I’ve ever faced. Early March 2023 was refinishing this historic wide pine on Federal Street in Salem featuring Provincial Stain and satin water based finish. I like to go the extra mile with staining pine and use a PreStain just before application which produces an incredibly consistent tone on normally uneven soft grain.

2023 is off to a great start! We were lucky enough to refinish the hardwood floors in Swampscott’s historic “Glass House”, built in 1957 by the modernist architect Martin Bloom. It was a challenge to sand, stain, and finish an area with so many angles, but the finished product (1) is worth every bit of effort.

Recent collaboration with .c.barnes_construction - what a wonderful looking kitchen. Red oak with a special walnut stain, it’s amazing how much depth there can be in a given species of wood with the right product and the right touch.

October was an incredible month for us. We spent the majority of it on Marblehead Neck (outrageously beautiful views). We transformed a customer’s entire home from oak floors stained dark walnut into a Nordic style white washed lighthouse (see what I did there?). New product and technique for us but the extra work paid off. Swipe for the process.

Pt. 2: While we were there, the customer asked us to refinish their tabletop and that was definitely a first (for me at least)! We removed the old waterbased finish with the drum sander, edged the perimeter and I took it home to find sand and coat with the same finish on the floors. (I refinish furniture as a side project too in case anyone is interested). ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

These floors were installed in the late 1800s in Marblehead, refinished who knows how many times but still in great condition. We set every nail (well over 200 cut nails), diagonally sanding the floor first to flatten any inconsistencies. We even refinished their cork kitchen floor which came out amazing! satin water based finish is our product of choice at the moment. Awesome customers, artists to boot (those are original works on the walls). See next post for the kitchen table we refinished to match the floors.

Worked in Nahant last week! These red oak floors saw a lot of action over 20 years: between kids, dogs, sand, dirt, and salty seawater, it was time for a reset. Cedar stain, three coats of satin polyurethane, and it’s a completely different space.

Right before the customers moved back in we got a chance to take some photos of this massive project from May and June. 8 inch engineered Villa Borghese plank flooring, all lengths were 6 ft, glued down, stapled down. Stairs sanded and stained by me as well. Plan your next project with us by going to our website rayswoodfloors.com and fill out the contact form.
