Almost 5 years ago I saw two pink lines and my whole world seemed to flip upside down, again. Then 4 years ago today, after 21 hours of grueling labor and a team of specialists, I knew immediate and unconditional love for a 4th time. To my super spicy, colorful candy (m&m’s) loving, solar system obsessed, neurodivergent buddy, Mommy loves you and is blessed to serve a God that knew I needed you when I didn’t realize it.

I keep telling myself to be more selective, only pick things that need minimal rehab. But, it seems that I keep purchasing pieces and underestimating the amount of time and work and $$$ it’ll take to makeover…this piece was no exception. With that said, I’m so happy with the result. And remember this is not just applicable to pets. Wildlife don’t understand it’s a celebration, and they think it’s danger. Watch out as you drive and have compassion.

As we gather tomorrow to celebrate our nation's independence, let's also remember those for whom fireworks are anything but festive.

For countless dogs, the explosions are terrifying. They don't understand that the loud booms will end. Panic can cause them to jump fences, break through windows, or run away in fear. Shelters see a heartbreaking increase in lost pets every Fourth of July. Many pets never get home again.

The same sounds can also trigger painful memories for many veterans living with PTSD. What is a celebration for some can be an overwhelming experience for others who have already sacrificed so much for our country.

Personal use of fireworks is also illegal in many areas.

If you're celebrating, please do so with caution.. Keep your pets safely indoors, make sure they have identification, close windows and curtains, play calming music, and check on neighbors who may have veterans or anxious pets at home.

Freedom is something we all cherish and defend. Kindness is how we honor the freedom and wellbeing of others, including other-than-human beings .
