Solid Hardwood vs. Engineered Hardwood: Which One Belongs in Your Home?

Both are real wood floors — but they're built differently, and that difference matters. Here's what to know before you decide!

1. Construction
• Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like: one solid piece of wood, top to bottom.
• Engineered hardwood has a real hardwood top layer bonded over several layers of plywood or high-density fiberboard.
• That layered core is what makes engineered wood more stable when temperature and humidity shift.

2. Where It Can Go
• Solid hardwood is sensitive to moisture, so it's best kept above grade — living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms.
• Engineered hardwood's stable core lets it handle basements, over concrete slabs, and even some kitchens without warping.
• If you've got a below-grade space you want in real wood, engineered is usually the way to go.

3. Lifespan & Refinishing
• Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished many times over decades — it's a true generational floor.
• Engineered hardwood can also be refinished, but only a limited number of times depending on how thick its top wear layer is.
• Both hold up well long-term when properly cared for; solid just has more refinishing room to work with.

4. Cost & Installation
• Solid hardwood typically costs more and is nailed or stapled down, which adds to labor time.
• Engineered hardwood is often more budget-friendly and can be glued, nailed, or floated — a good fit for faster installs.

Quick Rule of Thumb:
Above grade, staying long-term, want max refinishing life → Solid hardwood
Basements, over concrete, need moisture stability → Engineered hardwood
Tight budget or faster install timeline → Engineered hardwood

Does Plank Thickness Really Matter When You're Shopping for Floating Luxury Vinyl?

Short answer: yes! Here's what to know before you buy.

1. How Long It Lasts
The overall thickness (measured in millimeters) plays a big role in how the floor holds up over time, and it usually goes hand-in-hand with the wear layer on top.
• Thicker planks tend to pair with a heavier wear layer, so they shrug off scratches, dents, and everyday scuffs better.
• Thinner planks (around 2-4mm) work fine in guest rooms or low-traffic spots, while 5-8mm+ options are built for busy homes with kids, pets, and constant foot traffic.

2. How Solid It Feels
• Thicker vinyl is stiffer and does a better job masking small dips or minor imperfections in your subfloor. (Floor prep is still an essential step )
• It cuts down on noise and gives you that solid, hardwood-like feel when you walk across it.
• Thinner flooring can sound hollow or "clicky," especially if your subfloor isn't perfectly level.

3. How Comfortable It Is
• A beefier core means more cushion underfoot.
• If you spend a lot of time standing — think kitchens or living areas — that extra comfort adds up fast.

4. How It's Perceived
• Buyers and homeowners alike tend to see thicker vinyl as the higher-end option.
• A 6-8mm plank with a 20 mil wear layer simply reads as more premium than a basic 3mm product — and that can matter at resale.

Cheat Sheet:
4mm / 12 mil wear layer → Apartments and light-use spaces
5-6mm / 12-20 mil wear layer → The go-to for most homes
7-8mm / 20+ mil wear layer → High-traffic homes with kids and pets
