Why Were Mirrors Covered After a Death?

During the Victorian era, death came with an elaborate collection of mourning customs-and one of the most intriguing involved the mirrors in the home.

When someone died, families would often cover mirrors with black fabric or turn them toward the wall. 🖤

Why?

One superstition held that a person's soul could become trapped inside a mirror before making its journey to the afterlife. Others believed that seeing your reflection in a mirror in a house where someone had recently died could bring bad luck-or even make you the next to die.

Covering mirrors also served a more practical purpose. Victorian mourning emphasized solemnity and reflection rather than personal appearance, so mirrors were hidden while the household observed mourning.

Death in the Victorian era wasn't simply an event. It came with rituals, etiquette, symbolism, and more than a few superstitions.

🪦 Coffin: Traditionally, coffins have a six -sided, tapered shape, wider at the shoulders and narrower at the head and feet. This classic design was commonly used before the modern casket became widespread.

⚰ Casket: Caskets are generally rectangular, with four sides and often a hinged lid. The design became increasingly popular in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
