Long post ahead.
If you’re a contractor, landscaper, builder, property manager, or somebody involved in outdoor projects, you’ll probably understand this.
We recently installed both 30W and 60W solar lights out at this park, and there’s actually a reason for that.
A lot of people think outdoor lighting is just about putting the brightest light possible everywhere.
It’s not.
Different areas need different lighting levels depending on how the space is being used.
The walking paths is best to have a 30W fixtures because you want softer, controlled lighting that helps guide people comfortably at night without creating glare or making the area feel harsh.
The larger gathering areas and activity spaces is best to have a 60W fixtures because they require wider coverage and stronger visibility.
That’s one thing most people never see behind lighting design:
Every wattage, beam spread, fixture height, and placement decision is intentional.
Too much light in the wrong place can actually make visibility worse.
Too little light creates safety issues.
After 30 years in this business, I’ve learned that the best lighting systems are usually the ones people don’t consciously notice, they just naturally feel comfortable in the space.
That’s when you know it was designed correctly.
And if you recognize this park, let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear your memories or experiences here.
