Happy Birthday, Terri! 🎉

Hi everyone, it’s Adele and today is Terri’s birthday, so I wanted to jump on here to wish her a very happy birthday!

If you know Terri, you know how much she pours into everything she does. Not just every project, but every client, and every tiny detail nobody else notices but somehow changes the entire space.

So happy birthday to the lady who can spot a bad furniture layout from 40 feet away, is permanently over-caffeinated, over thinks every paint color, and somehow still makes renovation chaos feel fun.

We love you, Terri 🤍🫶

Everyone’s asking the same question right now…
can AI design my home?

The short answer… no.

It can create beautiful images.
Great color palette. Good lighting. Rooms that may feel complete.

But a home isn’t built on an image…

AI cannot design for an entire family who have different requirements and preferences, it doesn’t ask about your morning routine and plan your kitchen layout to support those routines, nor does it review drawings and catch small mistakes before they become big ones, it doesn’t adjust the layout to make sure that it meets minimum clearances, or coordinate all the materials, deliveries and all the trades, it doesn’t trouble-shoot when materials show up and they are damaged or require soemone to tell the tile installer how to lay them, and it certainly can’t help make the furniture pieces fit, pieces that worked on screen… but doesnt fit through the door or up the stairwell.

These are all very real scenarios that AI is not going to anticipate or solve.

AI can “help” with inspiration.
It just can’t carry a project all the way through.

So yes… it can design a beautiful picture.
But a real home?
That still requires us!

It’s often the most overlooked room in the house… but it doesn’t have to be.

This laundry room is not overly utilitarian. Not forgotten behind a door. And definitely not something that feels disconnected from the rest of the home.

This one leans a little moodier. A little richer. Still practical… but it is packed with character!

The cabinetry does a lot of the grounding here. Warm wood, full of depth, wrapping the room and giving it that built-in, architectural feel that laundry spaces almost always miss.

From there, it’s all about the layering:

Deep teal green tile with a bit of variation… something that brings depth without feeling busy

A patterned wallpaper on the ceiling that brings in personality and unexpected character… without competing with everything else

Unlacquered brass details to warm everything up and keep it from leaning too cool

A softer countertop to balance the richness and give the eye a place to rest

Open shelving… because function matters, but it doesn’t have to feel purely practical

Laundry rooms tend to get treated as purely functional.
A place you pass through. Get in, get out.

But when they’re done right… they carry the same level of thought as the rest of the home.

Still hardworking. Still practical.
Just… layered, intentional, and oh so chock-full of character.

A beautiful design means very little… if the wrong team is building it.

That’s why we’re intentional about who we bring into a project.

Builders, trades, and fabricators. Chosen for their skill, for how they communicate, problem solve, and carry a standard through to the smallest detail (all of it matters more than people think).

And then there’s the part no one really prepares you for.
Not the selections. Not the pretty part.

The coordination. The decisions happening in real time. Where something small could go wrong… and no one would catch it unless they were looking for it. This is what we are here for.

In the conversations with trades.
In the questions that get asked a second time.
In the details that just don’t quite feel right.

It’s less about reacting and more about having a plan and staying a few steps ahead.
Reading between the lines.
Noticing what’s missing before it shows up on site.

We’re making sure what was designed actually translates the way it should.

Because most of what protects a project isn’t obvious.
It doesn’t show up in photos.

It happens in the decisions that never turn into problems.
Hiring a designer isn’t about someone making things look good.

It’s about having someone who understands how all the moving pieces come together and knows where things tend to go sideways. So they don’t.

If you’re planning a renovation and feel like there’s more at stake than finishes alone… you’re right.

That’s exactly where we come in.

A little girl’s bathroom… make it fun but also but make it feel like it actually belongs in the house.

Not overly cutesy. Not something she outgrows in two years. And definitely not an afterthought.

This one leans warm, a little playful, and just detailed enough to feel special without trying too hard.

The arched alcove did a lot of the heavy lifting here. It immediately gives the room that sense of architecture that most secondary bathrooms are missing.

From there, it’s all in the layering:
Terracotta and muted blue tile that feels a little unexpected but still grounded
Warm wood cabinetry to bring in depth and keep it from feeling flat
Natural stone with movement and interest to bring in that organic feel
A scalloped vanity detail because straight lines everywhere can start to feel a little… predictable
Classic lighting that doesn’t date itself the second it’s installed

Kids spaces can be tricky. There’s always that pull between making it feel special for where they are right now… and not creating something that feels too young a few years down the road.

That’s really the balance we’re after.

Let it have personality. Let it feel a little playful. But make sure it still connects back to the rest of the home so it ages well and doesn’t feel out of place later.

For this Dana Point Horizon project, we’re designing a guest bath and a teenage girls’ bath on separate floors. Each space is approached with its own point of view, while still considering how it fits into the overall feel of the home (more on that soon!).

The palette leans into warm, neutral tones with layered textures and materials that bring in character without trying too hard. Tile layouts, scale, and finish selections are doing a lot of the heavy lifting here, creating interest in a way that still feels easy and livable.

A lot of the work has already happened behind the scenes. Space planning, proportions, how everything aligns and functions.

This is just the point where it starts to show!

Bathrooms like this tend to look effortless…
which is always a bit misleading

Layered neutrals, warm brass, subtle tile variation, natural wood… all working together to bring in character and warmth without tipping into “too much”.

A lot of decisions went into getting that balance right

Because the reality is… a bathroom can be beautiful, but if it doesn’t function well, you’ll notice that pretty quickly
usually around 7am!

Layout that actually works
Storage that makes sense
Materials that stand the test of time
Those are the details that quietly carry the whole space

Designed with that easy Southern California sensibility in mind, layered, relaxed, and quietly refined

If you’re thinking about a bathroom remodel or full home project, this is where we start…
not just how it looks, but how it actually lives

Part 3 of why hiring an interior designer is about much more than aesthetics.

Most people have a sense of what they’re drawn to. A chair saved here, a kitchen image saved there, maybe a dozen pins that all feel right in the moment. But when it comes time to bring it all together, that’s where things start to unravel.

Because good design isn’t about having more options or about the latest trending images on Pinterest or Instagram. It’s about knowing what’s right for the way you live. Which ones actually belong together and which one’s quietly compete.

This is where the process shifts from collecting inspiration to editing it. From reacting to images to making thoughtful, informed decisions. It less about what do I like and more about what works for your lifestyle, what works in your space and why.

The goal isn’t to overwhelm you with choices. It’s to narrow them down with intention, so every element feels considered, connected and right for the way you and your family live.

Interior design and is not just about aesthetics. It’s about clarity, cohesion and creating a home that makes sense for our clients.

A moment for the range…because it’s hard not to.

The La Cornue tends to do that.
Part performance, part presence… and very quickly the focal point of the kitchen

Around it, the details are doing just as much work, even if they’re a little quieter.
A pot filler that makes life easier (especially when you realize how often you actually use it!)
Hidden storage, pull-out spice racks, oil and utensil drawers… all the things that make cooking feel a little more effortless.

The Venetian plaster adds a softness and movement that keeps everything from feeling too perfect.

It’s a balance we come back to often in our Orange County kitchen design projects…spaces that look refined, but are designed for real life!
