We’re so excited to share our work on the Mkutano House in Elephant Valley at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park!

Our team had the opportunity to provide both architecture and interior design services for this immersive guest experience where we brought together natural materials, warm textures, and thoughtful detailing inspired by the surrounding landscape and wildlife.

It’s especially meaningful to see a project come to life in a setting that creates a deeper connection between people, nature, and conservation. We’re proud to have been part of the team that helped shape it.

We are proud to announce the Living Seas Gallery at Birch Aquarium is open for viewing! Developed through a collaborative, mission-driven process, the Adam R. Scripps Living Seas Gallery, features marine species from the Pacific Northwest and Coastal California to the vibrant Tropical Pacific. Highlights include an immersive grotto home to the Giant Pacific Octopus, a revitalized giant kelp forest exhibit, and a dynamic coral reef habitat, each breathing new life into the visitor experience. These immersive environments foster curiosity, creativity, and play, breaking down barriers between people and marine life to underscore our deep connection to the ocean. Dynamic wall graphics and digital projections heighten the sense of submersion, transforming the space without requiring major structural renovations.

In Ventanas, UC San Diego celebrated the culinary influence of the African diaspora across the Americas in both the menu and the interior design. HGW designed five woven white oak wood baskets as soffits above each food service platform to visually connect to this concept and worked with Tecture who crafted and install them. The basket soffits were awarded the AIA San Diego Divine Detail Award this past May.

The project also achieved LEED certification for Interior Design and Construction: Commercial Interiors where an innovation credit was achieved for biophilic design by highlighting natural materials, texture and colors and introducing planting within the dining and food service areas. 🌍

Celebrating 27 years at HGW! Fun fact, we’ve called three different office spaces on Bacon Street home. Fifteen years ago, we transformed the former Ocean Beach Auto Repair shop into an open studio environment, embracing the large service bays to bring in daylight, fresh air, and community connection. Striving for Net Zero Energy usage, our office utilizes passive and active strategies for power, water heating, lighting, and ventilation. We’ve also added to the eclectic beach community culture with our alley mural depicting the OB Alley Monsters.
