Some kitchens whisper. This backsplash talks a little louder, and I designed it that way on purpose.

The dimensional leaf pattern catches light differently every hour of the day, adding a layer of texture that balances beautifully against the rich, traditional cabinetry.

Backsplash tile is one of the easiest ways to add personality to a kitchen without touching the layout. This one earns its keep.

30+ years of designing kitchens, and one belief hasn't changed: the range hood is the modern hearth.

In this kitchen, the range hood carries that weight. Wrapped in warm wood and centered above the range, it commands the wall the way a fireplace once anchored a great room. Below it, the material story continues: rich wood grain paired with cool, veined stone, warmth and calm working the same wall.

A hood should never be an afterthought bolted above a cooktop. It's the one detail that tells you a kitchen was designed on purpose, not simply finished.

Before you ever see a rendering, there's a whole stage of work that has to happen first. And none of it is random.

Floor plan. Elevations down to the exact drawer dimensions. Material selections chosen together instead of one at a time. Every one of those steps is intentional.

By the time you're looking at a rendering, the unglamorous decisions are already made. Each key decision makes it through to rendering only after it's been tested against the layout, the materials, and how the space would actually get used.

Most people don't know what they're missing until it's not there.

A cased opening doesn't seem essential until you see a passage without one. A tongue-and-groove ceiling reads as decorative until you understand what it does to the scale of a room. A pot filler looks like a splurge until the first time you actually use it. In this La Jolla kitchen, not one of these decisions was made lightly.

The budget range you're afraid to say out loud is the one that actually protects you.

Some homeowners may want to round their budget down, or skip the number altogether, hoping it keeps them in control. It often has the opposite effect. Without a real number, your designer is guessing at what's actually possible, which means wasted time on ideas that never had a chance. A clear range lets your designer reconcile your wish list against your actual layout, before you fall for a material that never fits the plan.

The right designer doesn't use your number against you. They use it to protect what matters most to you. And when the budget is managed well, the result often exceeds what was originally planned for.

The render. Then the real thing.

In this contemporary kitchen, a few details were non-negotiable from the very first sketch. The faceted range hood surrounding the La Cornue range, the waterfall island with its matching textured base, the glass-paned doors leading into the scullery. Each one held firm from concept to completion.

A finished space that looks even better than the rendered vision? That’s the goal every time.
