Olive Juice opens today in San Francisco.

An all-day café, and the first one that is ours. We have spent years building rooms around other people’s concepts, working out what a brand wants to be and then making a space agree with it. Here the concept, the identity and the room were one conversation from the start.

Find us on the back patio at 354 Divisadero, Thursday to Sunday, 8am to 2pm.

How do you make a second location feel as special as the first?

Ingo’s first Phoenix spot drew its character from a beautiful curved building. The new downtown site was a new-build aluminum storefront with very little character to start from. We kept a mid-century thread running through every decision so the two felt related: soft lighting, earthen tiles, warm textured wood and mixed metals, with the brand colors worked in to keep the room bright and airy.

For two years a giant Monogram trunk wrapped a building on the Champs-Élysées, and the rumour grew with every month of scaffolding. Louis Vuitton was opening a hotel.

In January, Arnault settled it in a sentence. No hotel. Nobody will sleep there.

Meanwhile the cafés keep opening. Zara has one. So do Lacoste and LOEWE. Vuitton pours coffee on three continents, and in SoHo an eyewear brand now runs a fifty-seat restaurant with a Neapolitan chef in the kitchen.

There is a reason fashion keeps stopping at the café, and it is not budget.

Two bars can pour the same drink and be doing completely different jobs.

One wins the night. People cross town for it, photograph it, talk about it for a week. The other wins the decade. Nobody travels for it, and it is full on a wet Tuesday in February.

The briefs pull against each other, and only one of the two can actually be designed.

Signage is the only part of a project that is branding and interiors at the same time.

It has to read from across the street and from the next table, sit in its neighborhood without shouting, and still look right in five years, after the menu has changed twice.

Six of ours, all on glass.

Inspired by the warmth of a great listening room, Hi-Fi W**e Merced brings together w**e, music, and community in a space designed to feel collected, comfortable, and inviting.

From custom furniture to thoughtful residential details, every element was chosen to create an experience that feels elevated without losing its sense of ease.

The room came with two problems: it is narrow, and there is not much daylight.

Rattan softens both. Soft floral wallpaper draws you toward the back of the space and balances the masculine energy of the industrial architecture. Curved detailing on the back bar, the dining room, and the window to the back hallway settles the whole room into a Mediterranean language.

For twenty years, fast casual sold the same promise: fresher than fast food, cheaper than a restaurant, quicker than both.

That promise worked right up until everyone made it. The drive-thru is fresh now, the app is fast, and quality ingredients are table stakes from the airport to the strip mall.

So the brands pulling ahead in 2026 have quietly stopped competing on either one. What they compete on instead turns everything the category learned about scale inside out.

Before it was a pasta counter, it was an auto repair shop.

Most of the design followed from that. The industrial character stayed and carried the room, with old-world Italian layered over it: brass running through the space, greenery in the corners, colour and warmth doing the rest.

Italian undertones inside the grit of the Mission.

Fifteen-minute delivery was supposed to make the grocery store disappear. Dark stores on the edge of every neighborhood, an app that remembers your usual so you never have to think about it again.

The grocers people are queuing around the block for do the opposite. They ask you to show up, slow down, and browse. They are more expensive, more crowded, and slower to move through.

Something else is being sold in those rooms, and design is what sells it.
