In our recent project, we pulled back a lot of layers, finessed the flow and developed a color and material palette that would harmonize with the home's quintessential California setting. The pale greens of the tile backsplash in the kitchen evoke the dew-misted greens of a Bay Area morning.

A picture can be worth a thousand words, but the photo of this built-in bench doesn’t tell the full story of the brilliance of this mudroom/ pantry/ baking center/ coffee bar/ all-around workhorse of a space. Whether you are coming or going to the garden, or getting home from the workday, this little bench offers a sweet place to transition. A few cubbies, some coat hooks, and a place to drop a bag (or a basket of melons!), makes a world of difference in getting organized for the next thing.

My take on this chair, in this room, is that it is the unassuming power chair. It has the quiet confidence of knowing that it will attract whoever pays attention to all that it has to offer: The seat by the window and the fireplace. Tucked into a corner that feels private but offers a view of all of the household comings and goings. Easy access to a wall of books and memorabilia. Playful details of lime green piping and an oversized button on the coordinated ottoman where you can put your feet up at the end of the day.

This hand-forged iron chair originated in Spain in the 1780s, and although I love to imagine its various lives before it arrived in San Francisco, I really only know a fraction of the story. From Spain, the set of 2 chairs somehow made their way to England, which is where they were acquired by my client’s father. The set was later inherited by my clients and upholstered in a sweet eyelet cotton fabric, which made an interesting contrast against the rough hand-forged iron frames. When it was time for a refresh, we decided to keep the casual vibe, and streamline the look using faux leather.

When I first met this sweet neoclassical bench, it was clear to me that it had a second life to evolve into. The solid carved wood frame had loads of character and graceful lines. We had the original bench painted in a chalky white and reupholstered in a taupe fabric with a tonal fan-shaped pattern, giving it a slightly Gustavian style.

How to make the most of the bay window, a charming architectural feature that is abundant in San Francisco? The directional settee used in our project rises to the challenge in all the best ways. The rounded back nestles into the bay, and the shape of the backrest encourages its occupant to lounge facing towards a view. It also happens to be directed towards the media & fireplace wall in this room.

The Transamerica Building in San Francisco is a landmark building that marks the intersection of the Financial District, North Beach, and Jackson Square. Recently I was in the neighborhood for a meeting, which was my first time since the completion of its renovation led by architecture firm Foster + Partners. The design is understated, elegant, and modern. But what really captivated my attention is a small gallery known as Pyramid Arts that is tucked away on the back side of the building and accessed through a separate entrance.

Here in San Francisco, summer weather comes in short bursts. If you blink, the fog might roll in and you’ll have missed it!

For over 15 years, this family had lived on the west side of the city where the fog can be most persistent. So they understood the importance of being prepared to seize a sunny moment when it comes.

An extensive renovation turned an unfinished basement into living space that would spill onto a new deck. This steel dining set, powder coated in green paint, withstands the marine layer that lingers for much of the summer, while looking stylish, and requiring minimal maintenance. So, when the sun comes out, al fresco dining can happen in a flash.

A wingback chair has a wonderful presence in a room that reminds me of a wise matriarch. Her style has been refined and reinvented over the years, and she possesses a quiet confidence. Her tall and graceful stature often brings balance and visual interest to a room of low furniture.
