To say this is a big loss to us all is such an understatement especially right at this moment we’re all living through. But then again, I suppose we can all look at all the decades of inspiration and gift he has passed along. Wendell Berry was way too good for us all. Damn. Do yourself the biggest favor of 2026 and watch the documentary produced by two Bird film titled “look and see; a portrait of Wendell Berry” you can stream it for a small fee or patron the filmmaker for $100 …Just gutted over here. Too many good ones in one week. David Attenborough better stick around for a hot second while we all catch our breath. - kelly

It’s time for another “What’s in my Basket”!

This time with Eleana Hsu and Kevin Gondo, the founders of Shared Cultures, a San Francisco–based fermentation business reimagining traditional Japanese miso and shoyu through the lens of Northern California’s seasonal bounty. Inspired by local farms, wild-foraged mushrooms, and time-honored techniques, they produce small-batch miso, shoyu, and deeply umami-rich seasonings. Their handcrafted ferments are trusted by Michelin-starred chefs and home cooks alike for adding depth and flavor to every dish.

Just sharpened a fresh batch of Fineline gyutos, our homage to our favorite fine hand ground Japanese monosteel gyutos.
Hand ground A2 carbon tool steel with mini bubinga handles. Ground convex for smooth cutting and good food release and thin behind the edge for precise work. A2 has great toughness and good edge life, after lots of experiments we landed on a finish with a hard Iyo Meito natural stone roughly equivalent to 4000 grit synthetic. We wanted users to experience the knife as we found it best.
