One phrase stayed with us throughout Milan Design Week:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“If you are not curious, forget about it.” - Achille Castiglioni
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Visiting Castiglioni’s workshop studio revealed a practice grounded not in endless invention, but in attention. Everyday objects, industrial fragments, found materials, improvised mechanisms, all approached with relentless curiosity.

What felt especially relevant today is the reminder that creativity doesn’t begin from nothing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It begins by learning how to notice.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Many of the most resonant projects during Milan Design Week 2026 embodied this same philosophy: working with existing conditions, forgotten or repurposed materials, aging architecture, and systems already embedded in the world around us.

There was also something deeply moving in Castiglioni’s belief that objects should become so natural, so integrated into everyday life, that their creator almost disappears behind their usefulness.

Not novelty for the sake of novelty, but careful observation, experimentation, and the quiet transformation of the ordinary into something meaningful.

Perhaps contemporary design is shifting away from creating entirely new objects and toward reinterpreting what is already here - with greater care, intelligence, and imagination.

At Les Arcs, Charlotte Perriand shaped a new way of living in the mountains during the late 1960s and 1970s. The architecture settles into the terrain, allowing the landscape to lead the experience.

Her interiors are thoughtful and precise. Built-in elements, modular systems, and honest materials create a quiet rhythm that supports daily life at altitude. Light, views, and movement through space are considered at every turn.

The result is immersive and enduring. Spaces that feel connected to their surroundings and are designed with purpose.

This year at Milan Design Week, particularly in our experience at Alcova, we found ourselves reflecting less on objects and more on relationships.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Across various scales, materials, and disciplines, the most compelling work we encountered was driven not merely by novelty, but by reinterpretation. Designers embraced abandoned spaces, surplus materials, visible histories, and imperfect conditions as opportunities rather than limitations.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“The projects presented there are rarely isolated objects. They function cohesively as propositions, systems, investigations, and spatial experiments,” says RBS Designer and Brand Strategist Anna Danilova.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We noticed a meaningful shift:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- from production to transformation
- from authorship to stewardship
- from replacement to continuation
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Increasingly, the role of the designer is not just to create more but to reveal new possibilities within what already exists.

The future of design may depend less on what we produce and more on what we choose to retain.

The restaurant is inspired by this great evening, where masculine and feminine styles unite to create a handsome, timeless interior re-imagined into a modern culinary haven, aligning both food concept and design. The space will feel fresh and elevated, sophisticated but also approachable and inviting.

Palácio Quitandinha in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was originally conceived in the 1940s as a luxury hotel and casino. The property stands as a lasting testament to an era when design was both spectacle and escape.
