San Francisco Decorator Showcase House, 1984

We’re revisiting San Francisco Decorator Showcase’s ongoing legacy and the 2026 class of designers who continue its tradition.

A large painting by Brian McPartlon (BFA, San Francisco Art Institute, 1973) imagines California as gestural abstraction…a deliberate contrast to the room’s classical architectural detailing.

The carved, gilded, and hand-painted frame is from a Russian Hill artisan.

The floor lamp by Phoenix Day, (a Jean-Michel Frank design for Templeton Crocker’s penthouse in San Francisco), acknowledges the room’s design inspiration.

To celebrate the San Francisco Decorator Showcase House, we’re waybacking to a 1984 GHD showhouse room.
 
ALL THE THINGS WE LOVE
 
A custom coffee table by Gary Hutton, detailed in African ribbon mahogany inlay and the studio’s warmly modern signatures.
 
An early Joan Brown (above the fireplace) celebrates Bay Area Figuration and the special place artists have in it.
 
Bronze shadow vases by Ron Mann are strong decorative counterpoints and applause for other design heroes.
 
The Eileen Gray rug is an eternal favorite.
 
The chairs are a collaboration between GHD and Maguire.
 
Completing the arrangement, the John Dickinson goatskin chair sits alongside a custom, sandblasted pine desk.

We are pleased to announce that Ian Stallings has joined the studio in a Design + Creative Director role. With over two decades of experience spanning interior design, development, and community-driven cultural work, Ian brings a distinct perspective that bridges architecture, interiors, and the broader context in which spaces live. As founder of ISFAD Studio, his work has ranged from highly detailed residential interiors to large-scale revitalization initiatives, each grounded in a belief that design should be both deeply considered and meaningfully connected to place. At Gary Hutton Design, Ian will lead design development and creative direction across projects, working closely with Gary and the team to further evolve the studio’s legacy of refined, modern interiors.
