I’ve always loved a room where past and present are allowed a proper conversation. Here, the bold, gestural lines of a David Smith work hold their own beautifully above an antique French mantel—one decidedly modern, the other steeped in history. Add a quiet collection of bronze vessels, an antique rug, and suddenly centuries apart feel like the most natural of companions.

Sometimes the perfect place for a work of art feels almost inevitable. This iconic Ruth Asawa sculpture found its home tucked into the graceful curve of the staircase, where its delicate woven forms echo the sweep of the railing and play beautifully against the classical architecture. I love that something so ethereal can have such presence—changing with every step, every angle, every shift of light. A quiet conversation between art and architecture… and a rather magical one at that.

A staircase should take you somewhere—but why not make the journey itself memorable? Here, its sweeping curves create the perfect setting for a powerful Manuel Neri sculpture, a presence that seems almost to hold court as one moves through the space. It is always a joy—and a privilege—to work with pieces by this iconic Bay Area artist. Neri’s figures have such extraordinary humanity: raw yet graceful, commanding yet deeply intimate. Great art doesn’t simply inhabit a room…it gives it soul.

A little architectural fantasy in the midst of modern restraint. This spectacular Fornasetti cabinet is a world unto itself—part furniture, part folly, and entirely irresistible. Flanked by the simplest wool sheers, it’s given plenty of room to work its magic.

A little architectural palate cleanser… because sometimes the eye simply needs a moment of beautiful restraint. Pale stone, soaring windows, graceful columns, and exquisite ornament— I never tire of architecture that understands the irresistible power of proportion, detail, and a particularly lovely shade of white.

I’ve always had a weakness for mosaic—the artistry of assembling hundreds of tiny pieces into something wonderfully lyrical. Here, a shimmering floor of pale celadon and pearly white brings just the right touch of sparkle to an otherwise serene marble bath.

Stone (and tiles) has always been one of my favorite materials to work with—nature’s own artistry, with no two pieces ever quite alike. And yes, I’ve been known to disappear rather happily into a sea of samples (see second photo)! The pleasure is in finding just the right mix of color, veining, texture and pattern, then letting those choices come together in a room. In this bath, cool watery blues, crisp whites and intricate mosaic work turn something entirely practical into a little jewel box.

The joy of working with antiques? They bring a little history, a little mystery, and an abundance of character to a room. This exquisite 18th-century Italian etched glass mirror has all three in spades. Its intricate detailing and beautifully aged patina are a reminder that some things simply get better with time.
