A Japanese Showa period teak five-story pagoda model, circa 1940s–1950s.

The structure follows traditional Gojunoto temple architecture, where each level represents one of the five elements of the Buddhist universe: sky, wind, fire, water, and earth. The design includes a graduated series of roof shapes with deep eaves, centered on a structural Shimbashira (central pillar). A similar example rests in the permanent collection of the Spurlock Museum of World Cultures (Artifact Identification: 1993.20.0020).

A serpentine-front commode with mirror-veneered walnut reserves to the top, drawer fronts, and side panels. Raised on compressed bun feet with shaped brass hardware. Professionally refinished with even wear and patina retained throughout.

'Mellon’s aesthetic was all about discretion: how things should not “be noticed”; not be too pristine. But in spite of her genteel and quiet persuasions, she was capable of epic profligacy (her grandson estimated her lifestyle cost about $20mn a year). The couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga kept a separate atelier solely to service her personal wardrobe and Mellon retained a private plane for use at any given moment, to fly in her handbag (which contained her lipstick and suntan lotion), and such like, as she moved from house to house. She spent millions of dollars creating a rustic idyll for her daughter Eliza’s coming-out party, employing staff to paint a moss effect on pebbles to make the landscape look more “real”.'
