Every ranch needs a great barn. 😉 At our Pope Valley Ranch project, this dramatic black barn was designed as both a functional retreat and a destination within the property. Home to the clients’ collection of vintage military vehicles, ATVs, and dirt bikes used to explore the ranch, it also features a lean-to arcade filled with vintage games for gathering and entertaining after a day outdoors.
Clad in black on the exterior and warm natural wood within, the barn balances rugged character with thoughtful detailing, from herringbone wood patterns at each end to oversized wagon wheel chandeliers, carved buffalo skull sconces, and vintage headlight fixtures. Even the powder room tells a story, with rough wood siding interrupted by blackened steel channels, a concrete trough sink, and vintage English industrial lighting.
A space designed for adventure, nostalgia, and ranch living at its best.

Happy Mother’s Day to my first style icon and creative inspiration. 🥰

This photo was taken during a family vacation in Italy in the 1970s, where my mother looked effortlessly chic in her casual mini dress. She has always had an incredible sense of style and draws better than me. 😉 My parents both inspired my love of art and design.

Thank you, Mom, for showing me that creativity and style are truly a way of life.

Take a look at the great room of our Pope Valley project, featured in the May/June issue of . The design strikes a refined balance between light and dark, defined by bold contrasts and a cohesive material palette. Blackened steel beams, trusses, doors, and window frames pair with a black-oiled, laser-cut Austrian beech fireplace column, white oak ceilings and cabinetry, pale gray Italian plaster walls, and charcoal concrete floors.
Sixteen-foot-wide pocketing steel-and-glass doors open to sweeping views, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living. The oversized kitchen island and wet bar, both clad in hot-rolled steel, anchor the space, with the bar concealed behind a barn door crafted from vintage leather belts that also provides privacy for the adjacent bunk room. Pale gray custom concrete countertops flowing seamlessly into the plaster walls, discreet Bocci outlets, and gunmetal plumbing fixtures reinforce the clean, industrial language, while careful material selection ensures warmth and continuity throughout.
Furnishings follow a curated neutral palette, punctuated by the client’s signature blue and vibrant accents of orange. Bespoke hand-knotted rugs inspired by Wappo basketry ground the space, complemented by contemporary European lighting and custom furniture with a distinctly masculine sensibility, featuring faceted edges, blackened steel, textured glass, and hand-stitched leather by a master saddle maker. Contemporary abstract paintings bring vibrancy, depth, and movement to the room.

We’re thrilled to finally reveal our Pope Valley ranch project, featured in the May/June issue of . Thank you , .lisa, and .
Set across 60 acres of rolling hills, the design of each structure seamlessly integrates with the landscape. Inside the main house the contemporary design balances light and dark through striking contrasts, pale gray Italian plaster walls paired with blackened and hot-rolled steel, dark bronze hardware, and light oak ceilings and cabinetry. Furnishings follow a curated neutral palette, punctuated by the client’s signature blue and vibrant accents of orange. In contrast, the Tin Bar harkens back to the area’s Wild West origins, its exterior and interior intentionally composed with a looseness that rejects traditional design rules, layering reclaimed materials, antiques, and found objects into a richly textured, unapologetically eclectic environment.

In collaboration with 2M Architecture we reimagined the layout of the family room floor by removing a poorly functioning bathroom and transforming the room into a new gym, relocated from its former position in the garage. The result is a far more purposeful and elegant use of space, now filled with natural light from the adjacent family room deck and designed to be discreetly closed off when not in use. The design thoughtfully honors the home’s Spanish Colonial heritage.
