A prominent landmark in our San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz is most famously nicknamed “The Rock”… it was once America’s maximum-security prison, notorious for celebrity inmates and failed escape attempts. But do you know the origins of its name?

“Alcatraz” comes from the 18th-century Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala, who named the land Isla de los Alcatraces (Island of the Pelicans) because of the massive colonies of birds that once lived there.
