Let's talk about Lewisias! These are lovely, drought tolerant flowering succulents named after Captain Merriwether Lewis, of Lewis and Clark fame. Many colorful varieties have been selected and bred for home gardens.

Lewisias cotyledon is a perennial native to Southern Oregon and Northern California rocky alpine areas. So these want fast-draining soil. Don't overwater (root rot)... wait til soil is dry. Part sun or morning sun.

Other names you might see are Siskiyou lewisia, Bitterroot, Cliff maids, and Heckner's lewisia.

During their travels, Lewis and Clark encountered the related species Lewisia rediviva. This "original Bitterroot" was well known by local Native peoples and eaten for nutrition.
