The Hihn Apple Barn began its life as a lumber shed. It then became a packing barn for the renowned apples of Santa Cruz County, which were shipped as far as New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago as part of rail-road magnate Frederick Hihn’s vast business interests. We found some pretty cool packing boxes and stickers during this project. The plan for Aptos Village required this barn; 20,000 sf, and almost 200’ long to move ¼ mile north and spin around 180 degrees. Check out the videos in the comments. The adaptive reuse of this historic structure now houses a local grocery store. Parts of the single wall and timber frame are left exposed inside so the public can appreciate the conversion.

Have you seen my big sister? This baby statue has been living at MBA for many years. It is a maquette for "portal" located at Branhall park on Willow street. The maquette for the sculpture completion were auctioned as a part of the fundraising for the art installation. We loving having a miniature reminder of our local community in our office.

Willow Glens first parklet, located in front of the Garden Theater in Willow Glen was an early adopter to creating an inviting outdoor space, a destination for your weekend coffee or lunch out. Originally San Jose was limiting and testing parklets throughout the city, this was number 3 of the 5 allowed at the time and the design incorporated 5,000 lb custom concrete planters at each end for safety. Now parklets are everywhere; of all the parklets we have designed, the Garden theater parklet is our favorite and we hope it is yours too.

Look familiar? You’re in Willow Glen, home to MBA Architects for the past 40 years, and yes, we’ve been around that long. Fun fact, MBA Architects designed the Lincoln Avenue streetscape in the late 1980’s, more than 30 years ago. Designed to help visually distinguish crosswalks along Lincoln Avenue. Not only does it provide crosswalk visibility it also added areas for planters and public art sculptures. This design was also installed on each side of the bridge at Lincoln and Coe that crosses the Los Gatos Creek. Next time you’re in the neighborhood, take a look.
