PALEMONAS — THE NEW HOMELAND

In Lithuanian chronicles, Palemonas became a foundational figure in the legendary story of Lithuania’s beginnings.

According to tradition, he left the Roman world with his people and eventually reached the lands by the Nemunas. This episode imagines the moment after that long journey — when uncertainty gives way to relief, and a foreign shore becomes a new homeland.

The scene is not intended as a literal reconstruction of documented history. It is a visual interpretation of a legend that helped shape Lithuania’s historical imagination and national memory.

XVII Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival of North America — Chicago 2026

A project I’m especially glad to have contributed to this year: the official logo and visual identity for the XVII Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival of North America.

The symbol is rooted in Lithuanian ornamental tradition and reinterprets Baltic sun motifs, sacred rosettes, movement, unity, and continuity through a contemporary design language. The crescent at the base of the emblem acts as a symbolic bridge between Lithuania and its diaspora, while the green-and-white palette draws from the Lithuanian landscape and traditional textile culture.

The identity was developed as a flexible system for digital media, print, environmental graphics, merchandise, and event applications. Seeing the symbol become part of the actual festival — appearing across the stage, signage, clothing, photographs, and shared memories — was probably the most rewarding part of the project.

PALEMONAS — THE LAUREL

He came from the Roman world.
But not as a conqueror.

In this interpretation, the gilded laurel becomes a symbol of the world Palemonas leaves behind — status, triumph, and the certainty of Rome.

The river carries it away.

What remains is not conquest, but arrival.

This short film is part of my work on The Monarchs of Lithuania: The Legendary Court, the second playing card deck in the Monarchs of Lithuania series.

Palemonas is one of the most enduring figures in Lithuania’s legendary historical tradition. For centuries, the story of a Roman nobleman arriving in the Baltic lands formed part of the way Lithuania imagined its own origins.

In developing the character, I wanted to avoid the familiar image of a triumphant Roman conqueror. My Palemonas arrives as a man leaving one world behind and entering another.

The gilded laurel wreath thrown into the river is therefore not a historical episode from the chronicles, but a visual metaphor: a deliberate farewell to triumph, rank, and the imperial world he once belonged to.

This distinction is central to The Legendary Court. The project does not try to prove legends as documented history. It looks at how legends themselves became historical forces — shaping memory, identity, and visual culture.

Over the coming weeks, each king will be introduced individually—the chronicle tradition surrounding him, the historical meaning he came to represent, and the symbolism built into his card.
