“There are too many unexpected events in life. It’s impossible to predict them, and we cannot protect ourselves and have everything just as we would like. We have to be courageous in the face of change, and we need to be open and flexible. The reason we get upset when things change is because we’re unable to be flexible. We want things to be the way we planned them. If, however, we can be open to the reality that everything changes all the time, and if we can learn to adapt, we realize there is no reason to suffer.
It requires courage, of course, to allow whatever is happening to unfold. We have to assess the situation honestly and make whatever adjustments we can. We need to soften and be curious, rather than battling on, refusing to let go of our habits and beliefs. It requires practice, but the more we try to be flexible, and not push to achieve the outcome we want for ourselves, the less we’re inclined to suffer. We need to let go of old patterns of thinking, for embracing change is the only way of ensuring our lives are filled with joy. When we accept responsibility for where we are, we are empowered to change things, and we learn to make new and better choices.
Being open to possibilities is vital on our journey through life, because when we’re open, new and different opportunities present themselves. We see things we may have missed before, we begin to appreciate all the good things about life and people around us. We feel connected rather than isolated and anxious.” The Woman’s Book of Joy by Eileen Campbell
