10 years ago I jumped.

Leaving a 9-5 job in the design industry in hopes I could own a business, I took a massive leap and guess what? Open Gate Interiors has been one HUGE blessing! I’ve been able to work with a few hundred homeowners over the last ten years that have included simple refreshes to massive renovations. I’ve traveled down to Florida and across N.C. to the Blue Ridge Mountains, designing destination spaces. I’ve designed a few commercial up-fits and redesigned residential spaces while becoming more confident and seasoned in the trade.

Open Gate Interiors has been a constant despite the changing seasons of my life. I’ve been able to adjust my schedule to raise my newborn daughters and stay at home with toddlers. I’ve worked through the high demands of Covid in creating home offices and homeschool spaces. I’ve readjusted again to accommodate homeschooling my girls. All and all OGI has allowed me to be present during the most important seasons of life but has given me the creative outlet I’ve needed.

So, now it’s time to close this chapter and start anew. Being a business owner is demanding, and it seems elementary years are just the same. After a few conversations this summer and lots of behind the scenes, Ashley has officially welcomed me to the team as a Senior Designer! Ashley and Mallory are a powerhouse duo and I’m honored I get to work alongside them and keep doing the things I love! Not to mention having another creative to bounce ideas off of and collaborate.

Elkin is such a cute town in the North Carolina foothills to pay a visit. We can’t wait to share the work on this Inn in a few months!

Excited for some upper-level development going on at the Sample Store building. Putting living space in your empty upper floors improves the health and longevity of historic buildings. This is going to be an amazing project when it's completed!

Stately dining space for an open concept living.

Open concept homes are some of the hardest spaces to design. While it’s nice to have clear sight lines, it proves difficult to design in a way that brings warmth and character to the overall space while transitioning right into the other rooms of the house. Most times wallpaper isn’t an option on the walls because it can feel too busy or even incomplete. And accent walls aren’t typically my style. This particularly dining room was open to a two story foyer so its two walls were extremely high. We decided to focus less on decorating wall space and focused on furniture choice, patterns and color. Keeping it simple helped to create a timeless feel that can be dressed up or down for the occasion.

Friday we had our fireplace serviced, yesterday I unpacked our fire tools from a Christmas present. Today we light it! Just in time for all the 🧊❄️🔥

Breakfast views 🍳

6 weeks of living in our little Cape Cod house has been nothing short of magical. We survived the moving process and have the Christmas decor up just in time for the holidays. 🎄

Phase one of our updates was a doozy. We ran into a few unknowns that had to be addressed (isn’t that always the case with an older home 😅) and ended up doing a little more upfront than we thought we might do. We said goodbye to all popcorn ceilings, refinished our floors, took barn wood off the walls, took down beams, did away with cabinets on the other side of kitchen, added new trim in a few rooms, painted cabinets, got new countertops, replaced some appliances, changed out fixtures, had our slate and brick floors professional cleaned (so worth it!), painted all the rooms, pressure washed, cut down the most massive tree over our house, and cleaned out the ductwork to hopefully buy us a couple more years. 🤞🏼

Now that we are on the other side, we can say it was all worth it. It feels like home. 🏠
