WALL MIRROR
Hardwood frame with softwood surround, traces of paint 24½x 14¾¼"

In village life during the latter half of the 19th century it became fashionable to hang ornate decorations on walls of the main living room. Objects were collected by village girls as part of their dowry treasures. They were hung in a symmetrical pattern, each in a particular part of the room. At the junction of the two walls with corner benches forming the eating area, a
"holy corner" contained high on the wall a religious picture and a small shrine with decorations which varied from Catholic to Protestant homes. On the main wall, opposite the window, a mirror was hung along with birth and marriage certificates and photographs. Pictures were arranged in groups around the mirror.

The painted wardrobe, used for hanging and storing articles of clothing, was the village version of the ornate wardrobes found in manor houses of the 19th century. It was desirable to include at least one wardrobe in a well-to-do bride's dowry, since it could hold many more
articles of clothing than old-style dowry chests.
