How can you tell if gold is real?
Color, weight, and hallmarks can all give you clues. In this case, the earrings looked and felt convincing enough that Domenic guessed they might be 22k.
Then he tested them.
A simple acid scratch test showed they weren’t 22k. They weren’t even 10k. They were plated.
Which is exactly why gold gets tested instead of judged on appearance alone.

What makes the Omega Speedmaster FOIS different from the Moonwatch?
FOIS stands for First Omega in Space, a reference to astronaut Wally Schirra wearing his personal CK 2998 during the Sigma 7 mission in 1962, before the Speedmaster was officially qualified by NASA.
A few details that set this modern FOIS apart:
• 39mm case instead of the familiar 42mm Moonwatch size
• Straight lugs rather than the later lyre-lug case shape
• Gray-blue dial, inspired by early CK 2998 examples
• White chronograph hands, recreating the unusual hand configuration associated with Schirra’s watch
• Domed sapphire crystal shaped to mimic the profile of vintage Hesalite
• Vintage-style bracelet and Alpha hands
• Modern METAS-certified Omega movement
EVA.
The FOIS is a fascinating part in Speedmaster history: the watch that went to space before there was an official Moonwatch.

A few of the pieces worth looking for at Saturday’s Barbara Richardson house sale in Santa Fe.

The sale includes works by R.C. Gorman, bronze sculpture by Glenna Goodacre, Gary Mauro, Ernest Rancoulet and Cliff Fragua, a large group of designer pens, signed Muhammad Ali gloves, photography, decorative arts and more.

There’s a real mix here, from Southwestern art to traditional antiques, and some of the strongest pieces are the ones tucked into the smaller collections.

Ernest Rancoulet was a French sculptor working in the late 19th century, known for highly detailed figural and allegorical sculpture, often in bronze. His work can range from relatively simple single figures to dense, theatrical compositions like this one, where overlapping bodies, animals, drapery and movement are packed into a single vertical group.

That complexity is part of what has kept Rancoulet’s sculpture active on the secondary market more than a century later. Hundreds of his works have appeared at auction, with the strongest examples distinguished by subject, scale, casting quality and composition.

This Ernest Rancoulet sculpture will be available at our estate sale this Saturday. Come see it in person, along with the rest of the collection.

Looking for a Santa Fe estate sale this weekend?

Former New Mexico First Lady Barbara Richardson is downsizing her Santa Fe home, with a sale featuring New England antique furniture, R.C. Gorman, bronze sculpture, Baccarat crystal, designer pens, decorative arts and collectible memorabilia.

The house has a traditional East Coast feel, but the collection moves through Southwestern art, sculpture and more personal finds throughout the rooms.
