Before you buy your next antique, pull out a drawer and look at the front. This piece tells an amazing story of a 1880s cabinetmaker caught between two worlds.
If you look at the outside of the drawer, you see gorgeous, stamped brass hardware. This geometric style is pure Eastlake Movement, which didn’t become popular in America until after 1876.
But pull the drawer open, and look at the side. Those interlocking joints are hand-cut through-dovetails, featuring tiny, delicate wood pins that could only be chiseled out by human hands.
By 1880, big factories were already mass-producing drawers using uniform machine cuts. But the traditional craftsman who built this piece refused to give up his old-world skills. He adopted the latest high-fashion style for the outside, but built the structure using time-tested hand techniques.
