Great conversations, meaningful connections, and a shared commitment to K–12 success at the Arizona Association of School Business Officials Spring Conference 2026 in Laughlin, Nevada (April 1–3, 2026).

Our team was proud to contribute to the session:
“Playing the Long Game: How to Win at AASBO Conferences”, a conversation centered on building authentic relationships, delivering value, and showing up with purpose in the K–12 community.

A big thank you to our co-presenters for sharing their insights and experience:
• Mario Nuñez, SPS+ Architects
• Jerri Lynn B., Pueblo Mechanical
• Caroline Wellbaum, Wilmeng Construction

We also had the opportunity to connect through additional sessions, with Morgan Ellig representing SPS+ Architects in parallel discussions, continuing the conversation around communication, collaboration, and long-term impact.

Events like AASBO remind us that success isn’t about quick wins, it’s about consistency, trust, and partnerships that support schools and communities for years to come.

A Court Ruling That Could Reshape School Facilities in Arizona

A recent court ruling determined that Arizona’s current system for funding school facilities is unconstitutional, citing that it does not consistently provide districts with the resources needed to maintain safe, functional learning environments.

The decision highlights long-standing disparities between districts, where some communities are able to fund improvements locally while others struggle to maintain essential infrastructure.

If upheld through the appeals process, the ruling would require the state to develop a new funding approach that helps ensure students across Arizona have access to adequate facilities and learning environments.

At SPS+ Architects, we see firsthand how thoughtful planning and well-maintained facilities support student success and community growth. Strong school infrastructure is not just about buildings—it’s about creating spaces where students and educators can thrive.

Our Principal Partner, Mark Davenport, has been actively involved in advocating for improved and equitable school facilities funding in Arizona, helping bring attention to the challenges many districts face in maintaining safe and effective learning environments.

Our work on the District Support Facility Building 10 for Phoenix Union High School District was rooted in understanding operational flow, long-term durability, and the day-to-day needs of district staff.

Delivered through a collaborative CMAR process, this facility supports fleet maintenance, storage, training, and administrative operations — all designed with efficiency, clarity, and longevity in mind.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to have partnered with Phoenix Union and value the trust placed in us to help deliver spaces that strengthen their community.

Strong partnerships create lasting impact — and we’re always ready to help build what’s next.

Ideas Come First

Every successful project begins with understanding.
Before drawings take shape, conversations help define goals, priorities, and the unique needs of each client and community. These early discussions create the foundation for thoughtful, informed design decisions.

By investing time in clarity at the start, we help ensure that each project moves forward with purpose, alignment, and confidence.
Strong outcomes don’t begin with lines on paper — they begin with ideas.

On February 19, 2026, Copper Queen Community Hospital celebrated the groundbreaking of its $33M expansion — a significant investment in healthcare access for southern Cochise County.

This addition expands surgical services, introduces a new 14-bed medical-surgical unit with private rooms, and strengthens outpatient behavioral health and specialty care — all while maintaining uninterrupted operations.
We’re proud to have provided architectural services for this important community project.

Thanks to Michael Nervik for these wonderful photos.

Designing for Generations

Longevity matters in architecture.

At SPS+ Architects, we design buildings that continue to serve communities well into the future by balancing durability, flexibility, and responsible, long-term stewardship.

Thoughtful design decisions help ensure spaces remain functional, adaptable, and relevant as needs evolve.

Designing for generations means thinking beyond today—creating environments that deliver lasting value, support community life, and remain dependable for those who rely on them for years to come.

Collaboration at the Core

Collaboration is central to how we work. Design solutions are stronger when architects, clients, and communities share ideas openly and work toward a common goal.

Engaging voices early—including future users—helps align priorities, clarify expectations, and guide better decision-making throughout the process.

This collective approach leads to more thoughtful, responsive design and stronger outcomes for the communities we serve.

Architecture Myth-Busting (Education Edition)

Myth: Open, flexible learning spaces are noisy and distracting.
Reality: When designed intentionally, flexibility improves focus and collaboration.

Acoustics, spatial zoning, ceiling treatments, and sightlines all work together to manage sound and movement.

The result isn’t chaos—it’s choice. Students can collaborate when appropriate and focus when needed, while educators retain clear supervision and control.
Good school design doesn’t remove structure.

It designs structure that supports how learning happens.
