Closed, this marquetry roll-top secretary reads as a smooth cylinder of ribbon-striped wood. Roll the top back and a little piece of architecture appears: arched pigeonholes and three drawers, each one banded in floral marquetry. That inlay is the real feat here, a full bouquet built petal by petal from different woods, with scrolling vines trailing along the drawer fronts and bronze rococo pulls to match.

It suits anyone who still likes the ceremony of sitting down to write, or who just wants a place where the day's clutter can disappear behind a roll of the wrist.
