I often get asked how needlepoint ornaments should be stored, so here are some recommendations.
Store finished needlepoint ornaments individually, loosely wrapped, in a cool, dry, dark place. Wool yarn is the main risk: moths, carpet beetles, crushed stitches, and humidity.
Wrap each one
• Wrap in unbuffered acid-free tissue. Ordinary gift tissue is acidic and can yellow the canvas and fibers over time.
• Prewashed, undyed cotton muslin or a clean white pillowcase works if you do not have archival tissue.
• Stuff the inside lightly with crumpled tissue so the shape does not collapse. Do not pack it tight.
Box them
• Use an acid-free photo box or archival ornament box with dividers, one ornament per compartment.
• Skip sealed plastic bags and airtight bins for long storage. They trap moisture and can cause mildew. If you use a plastic bin for pest control, leave a small gap or check it a few times a year.
Container Store carries both the acid free tissue paper and the boxes.
Where to keep the box
• An interior closet with steady temperature and moderate humidity is ideal. Avoid attics, basements, garages, and spots next to exterior walls or heat vents.
• Keep them out of sunlight. Ultraviolet light fades both dyed wool and painted canvas.
Moths
• Clean the storage area before packing. Food crumbs, pet hair, and dust attract pests.
• Do not use mothballs or camphor . The fumes can linger in th fibers.
