Upgrading your home’s lighting doesn’t automatically mean opening walls and rewiring the entire house.

In many existing homes, the old switch can be replaced with a programmable keypad or dimmer that communicates wirelessly with the automation system.

That means you can upgrade from a basic light switch to smarter lighting control without turning it into a major construction project.

The goal is to make the technology feel seamless, not make your house look like a construction zone.

Putting a regular indoor TV outside because it’s cheaper can end up costing you more.

Indoor TVs aren’t designed for outdoor moisture, temperature changes or direct sunlight. They can be difficult to see during the day, and exposure to the elements can damage electronics that were never designed to live outside.

If you want a TV by the pool, patio or outdoor kitchen, use equipment actually designed and rated for that environment.

Saving money on the TV doesn’t make sense if you’re replacing it after one season.

Not every smart home product belongs in every smart home.

Smart bulbs and fixtures are becoming much more interesting. Crestron is the go to for full home automation. Sony gets the nod for picture quality, especially the Bravia 9.

A couple of smart switches can make sense in an apartment, but trying to control an entire house that way is a different story. Ring can be useful for notifications, but it wouldn’t be the first choice as the primary security system.

The right technology depends on whether you’re automating one room or designing an entire home.

Outdoor entertainment works best when you plan for it before the backyard is finished.

A TV under a pergola is in because any extra protection from rain, snow and direct exposure helps. Running no conduit outside is absolutely out because you’ll eventually need access to power, data or both.

Hardwired audio is the better move when possible, and outdoor rated equipment is a must when your system is dealing with New York weather, Florida conditions or salt air.

The biggest mistake is treating outdoor technology like indoor equipment that just happens to be outside.

Home automation isn’t just for houses.

We’ve built systems on motor yachts with 18 zones of heating and cooling, automated lighting, motorized shades, whole boat audio and complete video distribution across more than 30 TVs.

That can mean TVs disappearing into cabinets, screens dropping from ceilings and music playing throughout the yacht while you’re anchored offshore.

Some boats only need a simple audio system. Others are essentially floating cities and can have the same level of automation you’d expect in a luxury home.

Your backyard should sound just as good as the inside of your home.

Landscape speakers hidden around the pool are in because they spread audio throughout one of the loudest parts of the backyard without taking over the design.

Bluetooth speakers are out. If you’re building the space properly, run the wiring and use a system with enough power to compete with a full backyard.

And an outdoor subwoofer is absolutely in. That extra bass is what takes background music and makes the entire backyard feel alive.

The best home theater speakers are the ones you hear without constantly noticing them.

This room uses a 7.1 system with two built in subwoofers, side channel speakers and ceiling speakers, but everything was designed to disappear into the space.

White speaker grilles were painted black. In wall speakers were matched to the wall color. Even the front speakers blend into the room.

You don’t need speakers competing with the design of your theater. You should be able to sit down, hear incredible audio and barely notice where it’s coming from.

The best automation is the kind you barely have to think about.

We’ve gone from car alarms and radios to automating restaurants, commercial spaces and entire homes. Today, lighting, shades, TVs and audio can all work together without someone constantly adjusting individual controls.

In a restaurant, one button or a programmed schedule can lower the shades, dim the lights and completely change the atmosphere for dinner service.

That same idea applies at home. Good automation isn’t about adding more things to control. It’s about making everything easier to control.

A great home theater can still look cheap if the details are wrong.

Recessed lights pointing at the screen are out because they kill contrast. Uncontrolled natural light is out. Visible tape lighting is out because it looks like an afterthought. And lawn chairs in a beautifully designed theater completely ruin the experience.

4K is still the move for now, proper indirect lighting makes a massive difference, and a popcorn machine gets an automatic yes.

A home theater isn’t just about having a big screen. Every detail should make the room feel like an experience.

The biggest smart home mistake is choosing products one at a time without thinking about how the entire house will work together.

Alexa dimmers can work great in a room or two, but controlling lighting across an entire luxury home requires a more reliable system. Smart bulbs and fixtures are improving quickly, and the way homes are wired and controlled is changing with them.

If you’re building a new home, lighting should be part of the technology plan from the beginning, not something you figure out after construction.
