This Confederate $20 bill may have a pretty incredible Maine connection.

We recently picked this up as part of an old Maine collection. On the back, someone wrote:

“Benjamin Webster — July 26, 1871.”

That name sent us down a rabbit hole.

Benjamin C. Webster was a Civil War veteran from Kingfield, Maine, who served in Company F of the 8th Maine Infantry — fighting for the Union. He survived the war, returned to Maine, and later received a pension from Congress for disabilities connected to his service.

We haven’t been able to find an original example of Webster’s signature yet, so we can’t say for certain that he was the man who signed this note. But the name, time period, Maine provenance, and Civil War connection certainly make it an interesting possibility.
The inscription was added in 1871, six years after the Civil War ended.

Now we’re trying to find a document actually signed by Benjamin C. Webster to see if the handwriting matches.
