Fall in full swing brings to mind the kitchen at Tudor Retreat. The owners are avid gardeners, and we designed it to always feel connected to the garden.

With projects under construction in the San Juan Islands, Vashon Island, and (the one we don’t normally think of as an island due to its easy access) Mercer Island, I’m feeling grateful for an extraordinary summer and appreciative of our incredible clients.

It’s such a pleasure to get to live and work in such a beautiful place.

Warm wishes to you and yours this Fall!

Renovate or Build New?

Many homeowners are faced with a big decision, “Do I renovate (and/ or add onto) my existing home or should I build a new home completely?”

Things to consider when deciding between renovating (and/or adding onto) an existing home and building a new custom home.

TWO Grand openings this weekend! We all know about the opening of the overlook walkway connecting Pike Place Market to the waterfront this afternoon which is very exciting! But also this new little gem, Stitch Cafe ( .cafe.seattle ) in Capitol Hill, opens Saturday! So if you are looking for a comfortable place to start (or continue) your winter knitting project with an EXCELLENT cup of coffee with beans roasted on site, you now know where to go!

Pictured in the second image are the business partners themselves, cafe owner Sarah Chae (right) and roaster owner Shimon Masaki (left) at the soft opening.

We worked with Plumb, Level, Square ( ) to keep this project as lean as possible—working with existing elements while giving it a craft-inspired uplift.

I really like how the unique hardwood countertop turned out. Edward Pierce, owner of sourced and built it out of their shop in S**o.

(There is also a Phase 2 in store for the future, so stay tuned 😉)

When it came to the Living Rm and Entry Hall at , we wanted to preserve and enhance while bringing in more light and opening them up to each other. In designing the stair, we were seeking the right balance of simplicity, timelessness, and character. This meant detailed drawing studies of proportion and moldings at full scale.
We couldn't be more pleased with the light from the new dormers, added windows towards the garden, wider opening to the Entry Hall, and the overall effect.

Original early 20th c. design by Edwin Ivey (before various additions and changes throughout its history).

Much credit is due to Loren Dugan who built the stair and the team and the subcontractors.

'Afters' (x4) 👉 'Before'. One of my favorite aspects of the kitchen we designed at is the ensemble of windows at the sink and counter—enhancing the connection to the garden while restoring and strengthening the character of the home. This meant (in part) understanding the language of the original early twentieth century design and stripping away less-studied mid century remodels (the last 'before' image). Of course it took a lot of study and detail on both the interior and exterior to make it all sing, but we couldn't be more pleased! Classic with a little funk 👌 😉

We got bold with this Powder Rm—creating a little getaway with the wall-to-wall and vanity to ceiling mirror that puts you in-the-scene of the wallpaper.
Seeking the right balance of articulation and simplicity, we designed the brass vanity to be somewhat bold, but still light and porous—I think the tapered legs with subtle detailing were pretty key.

Props to the subcontractors and as the combination of wallpaper, mirror, and mirror-mounted fixtures and fittings is not easy!

Credit to the owners for leading the way with the wallpaper decision and seeing it through!

👉 Image 2 You won't see us posting a water closet very often, but this one is pretty fun.

Watercolor and marker site and pavilion studies at a historic site. Looking to create a sense of space—both covered and uncovered—on the exterior for community gathering and events.
I like to hand draft/ watercolor these from scratch using old school methods (I'm hoping to do a post about it at some point). It helps (forces) me to get into the details and seems to bring about a character that wouldn't have necessarily come about if I was tracing a computer model or doing a computer rendering in general. (Nothing against the computer model—we do detailed BIM models in the next phase of design, Design Development).
The pavilion gets into the language and character of the existing structure while being unique in its own right. The stone apsidal wall—built into the hillside—creates a sense of gathering (and something of a stage for events).
