If you want your wedding flowers to make a BIG impact, you don’t necessarily need flowers everywhere.

I’d rather see a bride put her budget toward one incredible floral moment that guests actually experience — something they walk under, dance under, take photos in front of and talk about later.

Then let the rest of the room breathe.

Candlelight, intentional color, smaller floral moments and a really good focal installation can completely transform a space without covering every table and surface in flowers.

This hanging baby’s breath with twinkle lights installation is probably one of my favorite examples. Once the lights went down and the dance floor filled up, it became part of the party — not just something pretty hanging from the ceiling.

If you’re trying to figure out where to spend vs. save on your wedding flowers: spend where people will EXPERIENCE them. 🌸

I definitely did not grow up thinking I’d be a wedding florist. For a long time, swimming was a huge part of who I was. Then television became my career. And somewhere in between traveling for shoots, producing shows and eventually becoming a mom, I started gardening.

At first I was just growing things because I loved it. Then I started cutting the flowers from my garden and designing with them. Then I started selling a few bouquets. Then I wanted to learn more.

I trained with Poppy Flowers / Wedding Florist & Poppy Designers / Florist Community , started taking on weddings, and eventually turned something I was doing out of my house into my full-time career. Looking back, though, none of these chapters feel as unrelated as they probably look on paper.

Swimming taught me discipline and endurance. Producing television taught me how to manage a million moving pieces, work under pressure, solve problems quickly and tell a story. Gardening taught me to pay attention to seasons, movement, color and all the weird little things growing around me.

And floristry somehow uses all of it. Careers are weird. Sometimes the thing you end up doing isn’t something you ever planned for — it’s just a bunch of seemingly unrelated parts of your life eventually finding their way into the same place.

Anyway, swimmer → TV producer → gardener → florist. Wouldn’t have predicted that one. 🌸

As I’m prepping for some weddings this month.. I’ve been debating whether I need to add a little block of Renewal Floral Foam into my centerpiece mechanics just to make things easier — more height, more structure, more support.

And then I look at this. This entire arrangement was made in chicken wire. And it was HUGE. The trick isn’t just throwing a little chicken wire in a compote. I use a pretty substantial ball of it that comes up and over the edges of the vessel, make sure it’s really firm, and secure the whole thing down with floral tape. That gives me the structure to get height, movement and that big overflowing shape without needing foam in the middle.

I made these for a client who had actually requested me again after I did the flowers for her birthday the year before — which is still one of the best compliments. Seasonal flowers from my gardens & Chesapeake Flower Exchange in pink, peach, orange, blue + green — delphinium, Sweet William, daisies, baptisia, privet and whatever else was beautiful that week.

A good reminder to myself that sometimes I don’t need a new mechanic. I just need to trust the one I already know works.

Pricing transparency ➡️ When I was starting out as a florist, I LOVED when other florists shared real numbers… and honestly, I still do. I’m always curious what other florists are charging and what different budgets actually look like.

So here’s one of mine. This wedding came to just over $7,100 and covered everything from the bridal bouquet + personal flowers to the ceremony installation, aisle meadows, sweetheart arrangements and greenery throughout the reception.

One of my favorite decisions was designing the 12 aisle arrangements so they could be moved after the ceremony and used again as centerpieces. Spend the money once, enjoy the flowers twice 🙌

And every single bloom was locally grown — dahlias, zinnias, cosmos, marigolds, strawflower, forget-me-nots and so many other little treasures.

There are SO many ways to spend $7K on wedding flowers. This is what one real wedding looked like. Sharing for the brides trying to understand floral budgets AND the florists who, like me, still love seeing what everyone else is charging. 😂🌸

When I first started as a florist, one of the things I obsessed over was figuring out which flowers could actually survive out of water for hours. I’d see these incredible installations online and think, How are they doing that?

Like most florists, I experimented with water tubes. And there’s absolutely a time and place for them. There’s also a time and place for products like AgraWool, FibreFloral and Renewal Foam.

But the more I designed, the more I realized that one of the biggest “secrets” isn’t a product at all. It’s flower selection.

For this chuppah, I used nothing but chicken wire and zip ties for the mechanics. The flowers lasted beautifully through a hot summer wedding because I chose varieties and greenery that I knew could handle being out of water. Orchids, anthuriums, amaranthus, roses, lisianthus & bush ivy, to name a few.

I’m still learning every season, but if this encourages one florist to try a foam-free installation, it’ll make me really happy. The more we share what works, the better our industry gets. 🌿
