This marker was at Pettit Creek Farms and thanks to Scott for educating and the information on this rare piece here 337 Cassville Road Cartersville, Georgia. Call to make reservations 770-386-8688. Take the kids and go by and see Scott and crew for a fun and educational time.
Fire insurance markers were metal plaques marked with the emblem of the insurance company which were attached to the front of buildings as a guide to the ins. company's fire brigade. These identification markers were used in the eighteenth and nineteenth century before municipal fire services were formed. The first ins. company to use a marker was the Sun Fire office established in 1710. People paid fire fighting companies in advanced for fire protection and would receive a fire marker to attach to their building. These markers were made of cast iron, lead, and brass. Embossed metal signs and flat enamel signs were also made. This particular marker is approx. 13 1/4" high and 11 3/4"wide and weighs approx. 8lbs.
