I do not usually make posts like these and it's a bit of a longer read, but I promise it's worth it❤️❤️
✨How to approach getting an order to remake another artists work, when you've been hurt in the past from your work being replicated✨
Last year I was asked if I could make a piece that someone had seen online and fell in love with. Of course, I was thankful that they approached me to make something for their home, but also that they believed I had the ability to replicate something incredible! However, I always approach "remaking" other people's work tentatively...
A couple of years ago I was approached by someone at a vendors event I attended wondering if they could take a picture of a piece of mine to get approval from their husband to purchase! Later I realized the picture was taken to instead replicate and sell through their own business. I'm not going to lie, this made me feel very uneasy. So when it came to being asked to replicate and run the risk of hurting another this way, I reached out to the original artist (the ever talented and awesome, Marissa ).
I had a great conversation with Marissa about the situation of being asked to make a piece like hers. In the messages I brought up how I’ve been hurt by this in the past and that I didn’t want to do this to her. I mentioned not doing her piece exactly, but definitely pulling inspiration from one because that’s what my customer asked for. Also, how I didn’t even want to post about it because it’s not my original idea and that I feel like I’m stealing another’s style. She reassured me that she was okay with me making the piece and told me to definitely post it! She actually mentioned I am the only person to ever ask permission before just making and posting work similar to hers. As artists, we draw inspiration from so many different places, it's how we keep our work fresh! But blatantly replicating another's work piece by piece just doesn't sit well with me. So the way to approach being asked to make other artists work is as simple as having a conversation, and being sure to give credit where credit is due! 💗💗
Thanks again to Kira for your order and Marissa for your kindness!!Now enjoy this blooper of me to lighten the mood!😅😅
