Studio Portrait Study – Searching for Atmosphere and Simplicity

Today’s live portrait session was a reminder that sometimes less detail creates a stronger painting. I focused on large value shapes, soft transitions, and harmony between warm oranges and cool gray-violet tones.

Rather than fully rendering every feature, I tried to keep the portrait painterly and atmospheric, allowing some edges to disappear while sharpening only a few important accents around the eyes and mouth. The studio lighting created delicate color shifts across the face and neck that became the main inspiration for the piece.

One of my goals recently has been learning to simplify forms and trust suggestion more instead of overworking passages. This portrait study helped me continue exploring that direction.
