Our youngest is napping and we haven’t done any letter sound work this week. So what better time than now to whip together a quick activity. We introduced letter t and so I grabbed a plate, his markers/scissors, tape, beans, clothespins, and a half used coloring page.
He colored his taco shell brown while I colored quick the coloring page green, yellow, and brown and separated them.
He folded back and forth the green and we cut them up to make our shredded lettuce.
He placed it in his plate while I cut up the yellow to make some “shredded cheese”.
We both crumpled some brown squares into “hamburger” and tossed it in the taco. At this point I decided we haven’t incorporated the letter sound much so I drew a Tt and said the game is to say the sound when we throw it and say the letter T if we hit it with our hamburger pieces.
After all the paper taco fillings were in, we put beans over the top to “trace” the Tt.
Lastly we folded our taco and put the clothespins on to fasten it tight. I put tape on top of my clothespin so I could write the letters T A C O on them and still be able to reuse the clothespins on a later day. We reviewed the sounds of the ones we knew while introducing the new ones as he placed them on.
Next thing we know we have our “tasty taco” for the letter t. I realized the beans sounds like a shaker and then we did some music patterns (ta ta tee tee) and called it our “tasty taco tambourine”.
All this to show that you don’t need elaborate toys, workbooks, plans, or materials to connect with your child in a playful and educational way. A lot of learning is child led and on the spot. I’ll continue to post updates on simple activities you can make and do at home along with my sensory bins that are intentionally prepared and ready to go from the start!
