Thank you so much to everyone who voted for The Sawmill Farm project in the Sealaska Path 2 Prosperity contest. We came in 2nd to Coppa in Juneau. A few thoughts:
Coppa (besides having a population base 4 times as large as Sitka) ran radio ads promising to throw an ice cream social for the whole city if he won. Several people mentioned to me that they thought this wasn't fair. IT WAS PERFECTLY FAIR!!! If I had had an ice cream parlor in Juneau I would have done the same thing. He has a great idea and that rhubarb sherbet recipe he has come up with is phenomenal (I've tasted it). So, please, let's not have any animosity towards Coppa. In fact, go eat his ice cream when you are in Juneau (I do!).
The Sawmill Farm started way before there ever was a P2P contest. The funding would have been great but it was not going to make us or break us either way. We are still here working the plan. And we have big plans!
Because of the P2P contest, a whole lot more people all over the country are aware of us now than ever before. That is a very good thing and I am amazed at some of the big names in sustainable farming who have contacted us wanting to help.
Thank you again and we will be posting some very fun activities and opportunities in the near future.

I need your help!

This actually has a lot to do with Raven Frog Fibers. The Sawmill Farm is a project I have been working on for over 12 years. We are going to use cast off food from grocery stores and restaurants to humanely raise chemical and antibiotic free, locally produced meat. The growth of the farm will allow us to expand our locally produced fibers from angora rabbis and cashgora goats.

PLEASE go to the link posted in the comments and vote for our Sawmill Farm project. What we are doing is really important and not just for Alaska! I need about 2,000 votes by Sunday and this group can easily make that happen. There is a video at the link that tells a little about what we are doing and why. $40,000 in funding is on the line and the voting ends Sunday. Please help and share the link wherever you think it might help.

Here is the link to a nice write-up about the farm to table dinner we did 2 weeks ago. As far as we know it is the first one in Alaska!
Thank you for the help!

A rare happening! We have a VERY LIMITED supply of washable angora blend spinning fiber to sell. There isn't enough to offer it to yarn shops so we are selling it here.

The fiber is 50% superwash merino, 25% natural angora from my rabbits and 25% synthetic angora, which is a super fine nylon. It is truly machine washable, soft enough for baby clothes and strong enough for socks. It haloes to a wonderful fuzzy texture without felting. It takes acid dyes beautifully.

It is put up in bumps of just over 3.75 oz., and spun at a sock weight one bump will make a pair of socks or mittens. The album shows pictures of the fiber, as well as a swatch and a flip top mitten that have both been washed and dried. The mitten pattern is also available from Raven Frog Fibers in youth and adult sizes.

We have some in white and some in light gray. And as mentioned, it is very limited quantities so PM us about availability. The bumps are $30.00 each and $5.00 shipping no matter how many bumps you buy.

This blend has been very exciting for me. Once I got the first test batch and saw its properties, the ideas for how to use it became endless! This is great stuff!

I will be teaching knitting and spinning in the midwest in the next couple weeks. August 19-21 I will be at Calla Lily Yarn and Gifts in Wooster Ohio, and the 26th-28th at The Red Purl in Niles, Michigan. I will post details of the classes in each location as comments below, or check out the shops' websites: callalilyyarn.com and redpurlknits.com.

If you are headed to Sock Summit, first, LUCKY YOU!, Second, you can see and feel the machine washable, angora blend fiber and swatch. Donna Druchunas is teaching there and she has the swatch, and Janel Laidman is teaching "Spinning for Socks" and she has the fiber. We are preparing more of the blend to be milled right now and it should be available very soon.
