Do you have narrow strips of Designer Series Paper that are too pretty to throw away?
Today I’m showing you how to turn those paper scraps into a beautiful handmade card using a Rectangle Log Cabin card sketch and the Sunflower Fields Designer Series Paper.
The design was inspired by the traditional log cabin quilt block. Paper strips are arranged around a center rectangle to gradually build the complete card front. It’s simple, satisfying, and a wonderful way to combine several coordinating patterns.
I originally shared this card sketch at our monthly Inkin’ with Heart Stampers team meeting. For today’s video, I’m recreating it with Sunflower Fields Designer Series Paper to show how changing the paper can give the same sketch an entirely new personality.
 IN TODAY’S PROJECT
I’ll show you how to:
• Build a Rectangle Log Cabin card layout
• Arrange paper strips around the center
• Use coordinating Designer Series Paper patterns
• Turn leftover paper strips into a polished card
• Add a simple focal point and greeting
• Adapt the sketch with supplies you already own
This is a great project for beginning cardmakers because we’ll build the design one strip at a time. It’s also a fun layout for experienced paper crafters who want fresh ideas for using their growing collection of scraps.
Don’t worry if your paper strips aren’t all the same size. A card sketch is a helpful starting point, and you can adjust the pieces to fit the scraps you have.
You can also change the direction of the strips, rotate the completed layout, use cardstock instead of patterned paper, or add extra texture with embossing.
