One of my latest custom clock designs combines some of the most recognizable symbols of the automotive world—crossed pistons, a spark plug, and a gear—all brought together in a clean layered design.

Each clock is carefully designed, 3D printed, assembled, and fitted with a silent quartz clock movement to create a functional piece of garage décor that's built to last.

How Does a 3D Printer Print in Mid-Air?

One of the questions I hear most often at craft fairs is:

"How can it print that without it falling?"

The short answer is...

It can't.

Just like building a house, every new layer of plastic needs something underneath it to support it while it's being built. If part of a model extends too far outward or starts in mid-air, the molten plastic has nothing to rest on and would simply sag or fail.

That's where supports come in.

Before the printer ever starts, the 3D model is prepared using software called a slicer. The slicer analyzes the model and determines where temporary supports may be needed.

Most of the time, the slicer automatically generates those supports based on the settings you've chosen. If a model has unique details or I want more control, I can also manually "paint" supports onto specific areas, telling the slicer exactly where I want them to be placed.

As the printer builds the model layer by layer, it also builds these temporary supports underneath any areas that would otherwise be printing into open air. In these photos, you can see the supports holding up the eye sockets, cheekbones, fingers, and other overhanging parts of the skull while it's being printed.

This particular skull also has another hidden feature. Partway through the print, the printer automatically pauses so I can insert magnets into the base. Once the magnets are in place, the printer resumes and permanently seals them inside the finished model. When the print is complete, the magnets are completely hidden—you'd never know they were there.

The supports shown here are called tree supports because of their branching shape. Instead of building large solid blocks of plastic, they grow upward like small trees and only touch the model where support is actually needed. This often uses less material, is easier to remove, and usually leaves a cleaner finish on the completed print.

Once the print is finished, the supports are carefully removed and discarded. Although they were essential during the printing process, they were never meant to be part of the finished model.

Most people only see the completed print. What they don't always see is the planning that happens before the printer even starts. From generating the gyroid infill inside the model, to automatically placing supports, to pausing the print so magnets can be embedded, every step is carefully planned to produce the best possible result.

That's one of the reasons I enjoy talking about 3D printing so much. Every finished print has a story behind it, and I hope this series helps show some of the things that most people never get to see.
