Happy Earth Day weekend! I wanted to take this specific holiday to explain a bit more about....wax and let those interested, the priducts I use and why! Not all wax is created equally! Here is a great article that breaks down the different types of waxes that almost all candles and wax melts are made of.
All of my products are made with soy wax, despite it being more expensive than paraffin wax. Here is why:
1) It is exponentially better for the environment. Paraffin wax is a byproduct of petroleum and coal. While it is non toxic, it is a petroleum product that comes from a non renewable source. As a byproduct of petroleum and coal, It's the least expensive wax for candles and wax melts. Soy, on the other hand is sustainable and plant based and is sourced from renewable products. It is better for the environment and the socioeconomic chain. I research each product I use in making candles and wax melts and am happy to share that information with my customers! Soy is more expensive but I want to offer you guys a beautiful candle/wax melt that is better for the environment. Even though my candles/wax melts have significantly higher product costs, I am able to keep my prices down because I don't have large overhead, commissions or advertising expense to bloat the product cost. And 100% of ALL sales stays local to Spokane (except the states sales tax, that heads to the west side never to be seen again).
2) Soy wax lasts much longer than paraffin wax. It lasts as much as 50% longer!
I am committed to continuous improvement! Product improvements on the horizon for Katie's Candles in 2022:
1) Elimination of the plastic containers the wax molds are packaged in, and moving to recycled product wrapping.
2) I have already started recycling my candle tins and glass candle containers. I've had quite a few customers return tins/jars for refills! I will refill any of my containers for $1.50 an ounce for the large glass containers and $9 for the tins.
3) I am testing different even more sustainable waxes, such as bees wax, which is the most sustainable and healthiest of all the waxes!
I'm putting this out there because I didn't know anything about waxes and what makes a responsible/sustainable and beautiful candle! Not everyone will be interested in this! But, on this earth day weekend, I wanted to responsibly address what I use, the impact on the earth, and initiatives to always evolve for health and sustainable candle burning experience 🙂
The attached article highlights the pros and cons of the three main wax types. Happy reading!
In this article, we'll explain the real differences between soy, beeswax, and paraffin for candle making and how to choose one for you!
