We are giving away our top tips for all floral designers taking on a destination event π
1. Wholesaler / Supplier
Do your research on floral suppliers in the area before you go. Youβll want to know where you can purchase flowers, hardgoods and supplies if you need them. Last-minute changes happen, and having a local resource can save you!
2. Workspace
Figure out where youβre designing before anything else. If I can rent workspace from a local wholesaler, thatβs always my first choice. Next would be a large rental house with plenty of room to spread out and process flowers. Your venue may even allow access a day or two early. Whatever you choose, make sure you have enough space, water, AC and easy loading access.
3. Plan, plan, plan
Make a VERY detailed packing list. You wonβt have the luxury of running back to your studio for something you forgot. Think through every step of production and installation, and have backup plans for the things that could go wrong. Bring extras of your most important mechanics and tools.
4. Transportation
Think beyond just getting the flowers to the destination. How are you getting all of those finished designs safely from your workspace to the venue? Consider vehicle space, temperature, travel time and what should be designed ahead versus finished on site.
5. Strategize Your Team
I love bringing my own team whenever possible, but sometimes that just doesnβt make sense for an out-of-town wedding. Research local floral Facebook groups and start connecting with experienced freelancers in the area ahead of time. Having good help on install day is worth it!
6. Charge Accordingly
An out-of-town wedding costs more to produce. Period. Travel time, lodging, transportation, extra labor, workspace rentals and the additional time spent planning all need to be accounted for. Donβt charge like youβre producing a wedding 20 minutes from your studio when youβre actually taking your entire business on the road.
