A lot of people dont understand what goes into proper stain matching. EVERYTHING that was done to that wood created the result. Was the wood bleached or pretreated, how many coats of stain were used, what finish was put on at the end. To stainmatch you have reverse engineer the whole process and then duplicate it.
I currently have such a project. Having already determined the wood was bleached, I bleached a bunch of scrap pieces and began mixing different amounts of the 3 closest colors and some black stain to darken when needed. Took over 5 hrs to get an exact match with the correct finish and that was after determining the wood was bleached. The more the details count the more time it takes to get thwm right.
