It has been a busy couple of weeks at RBLD. Our team has been here, there, and everywhere putting the final touches on some incredible, almost-completed projects. Do you want a sneak peek? We are proud to have a role in this project! Randy Burkett Lighting Design will be providing professional lighting design consultation for the facilities being built around the Sacred Red Rock’s new site.

The Return of the Rock Event will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 29, in Watson Park. The event is the only public celebration in the process of returning and relocating Iⁿ‘zhúje‘waxóbe (the Sacred Red Rock) to the Kaw Nation.

Earlier this week, an expert crew from Belger Cartage Company painstakingly prepared to remove the Sacred Red Rock from the base upon which it has sat since 1929. With careful planning and preparation, Iⁿ‘zhúje‘waxóbe was lifted from the base with a small crowd gathered to observe at a safe distance. The next step will be to begin disassembling the base, removing the smaller rocks, and placing them in bags so they move with Iⁿ‘zhúje‘waxóbe to Council Grove, Kan.

Congratulations to our long-term team member Susan Jennings, Associate IALD for her major milestone of 25 years at RBLD! Susan began working with Randy Burkett Lighting Design in May of 1998, straight out of Maryville University. Susan has proven to be an outstanding designer and has seen extensive evolution in the lighting industry during her years of service. Some of Susan's favorite projects through the years include St. Louis's beloved Citygarden and the Gateway Arch, plus 800 17th Street PNC Place in Washington, DC, and Romare Bearden Park in Charlotte, NC. Congratulations to Susan for all her wonderful work throughout the years. We can't wait to see what else her continued creative collaborations will bring into the world.

Our office will be closed today Monday, January 16, 2023, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. RBLD is proud to have partnered with David Mintz, ROMA Design Group, McKissack & McKissack, and Lei Yixin on the lighting design for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC, which opened in 2012. This inspiring memorial is a commemoration of the life and work of Dr. King. It honors his national and international contributions to world peace through non-violent social change. The memorial and park, located on the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC sits at the midpoint between the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials. Millions of visitors to the site have encountered a place which emphasizes their own personal experience.

“For me, it was the contrast of this bigger-than-life sculpture of a man with his inspiring words inscribed on the walls at my eye level, challenging me to continue his work for justice,” says RBLD Principal, Lisa Reed. “There is a movement in our industry toward equity and justice in lighting. It is, in part, an effort to minimize the quality stratification of light experienced in the public realm. Creating quality lighting solutions that respond to the needs and requests of every community can be achieved. We can educate stakeholders and all work together to push and pull the arc of the moral universe in the direction Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. worked so hard to make it bend…toward justice.”

Members of the RBLD team volunteered at the Great Circle Holiday Fair on Saturday, December 10th in Webster Groves, Missouri.

Great Circle is a non profit behavioral health organization that provides counseling, crisis programs, support, and care to children and families in time of struggle.

The fair included games; toys; winter hats, gloves and coats; a photo booth; and lots of food and drink! Prancer, the reindeer along with Santa and helpers, made appearances.

Over 200 foster families and foster kiddos were in attendance. Everyone had a wonderful time! RBLD was happy to participate in spreading a little holiday cheer to those in the community!
